Fruits on perlite
    #7466746 - 09/29/07 09:24 AM (16 years, 4 months ago)

Hey everyone lets say a guy had a pf tek going with a perlite humidified terrarium, and was giving plenty of fluorescent light a day and everything was going great except...... at the bottom of a few cakes the fruits rather large but not ready to harvest are growing downward and some are contacting the perlite will this be a problem? i mean should it be plucked or should it be allowed to continue to see if it finally moves upward towards the light?

i dont understand why it would do that. is your FC see through allowing the light to reflect off all the sides. is light coming from underneathe. when you took the cakes out of the jars did you set them the same way they were sittin in the jar???????

the fc is transparent with light directly on top of the lid , the cakes bottom in the jar is now on top in the fc and most new pinsets are curving towards the light , the ones in question were fruit bodies while in the jar before it was colonized and growing upward so once the jar was birthed and place in the fc the existing fruits were facing downward, while most have started curving upwards the ones at the very bottom of the cake(which was the top before birth) didnt have enough room to curve and the soon to be cap is touching the perlite and the body is about 2.5 inches long and fat what should i do?

This is very common and is caused in part by the light reflected back up by the perlite. It's not a problem at all. You can lay a small piece of wax paper down to prevent the growing mushroom from contacting the perlite directly.

i was thinking perhaps that was what was happening because of the reflective quality of snow and such, so if i put something there to stop it from touching the perilte do you think it will eventually curve upwards so i could print it or will it continue protruding downward until it causes the cake to become unbalanced? and thanks for the tip RR

Once it hits the paper it'll straighten out and probably start bending back upwards.
