Now I know what all the fuss is about...

I just opened and drained my first bag of perlite. And now I understand what all the fuss about hating perlite is about! Damn does that thing stick to everything, yuck!
I'm test running my FC for next fridays fruiting! Cakes at 100%, hurray! No contams and kind of rhizomorphic mycelium in there!
I'm really surprised and happy I got no contams. My first time and I screwed some parts up by using the oven-air-flow-glove-box-tek, not having a PC, forgetting my spores on hot oven lid, and some other stuff. Beginners luck I guess

if you get better than 90% RH while testing your FC, let me know.
i just washed, drained, and filled my FC with Perlite(using the 6 sided Shotgun FC) and i cant get more than 93% RH, and that was right after misting...

I'm at 63% now, and that's after misting too. My hygrometer only goes to 95% though I've ordered a free sample sht11 on the other hand, so I'll be building a computer connected hygrometer/thermometer later. Got to love them graphs!
Outside RH is: 47%-60%
64% now, T+30 minutes 69%, T+1 hours (22.2 degrees C) 84%, T+6 hours (27 degrees C [move to server room to get temp up]) 90%, T+next day (~ 22 degrees C)

As much as I respect all of RR,s tech and board post/help, I too have had problems getting perlite to keep an RH of 90 consistently. I have come the conclusion that either I am getting something wrong , (even though Ive read ALOT of the perlite post)or since th RH in my part of the country is so low that it affects the working RH of the perlite. I switched to a ultrasonic humidifier and a timer

At first, I had that problem too, but then I realized that my AC was blowing air right at the FC. So I ghetto-rigged some paper to deflect the flow of air under the FC and that fixed the problem - RH stays between 96-99 - and above 88 even with the lid is open.
so just check that you do not have a fan or AC blowing air at the FC. hope this helps.

Did you guys make sure to calibrate your hygrometers? Search up on it if you didn't, I'm pretty sure that might be your problem.

yeah my rh only gets to 70 or so at its highest. mostly stays around the 60s. i really think its just that theyre not very accurate. i mean if it was really that low then it wouldnt be growing so well. then i again i dunno, im just a beginner at growing at least the temperature seems to be accurate.

I've checked my hygrometer now, with the salt-method, and it says 77% (after about 5 hours). However, I'm guessing the accuracy isn't linear...
Anyhow, I only got it up to 90%, so I'll go buy an ultrasonic humidifier tomorrow. Found a cheap one ($35).
Can I use the humidifier with a shotgun box (with perlite)? Or do I have to plug all the little holes and add a fan?

If you have four to five inches of perlite and 1/4" holes drilled, you have ample humidity. Remember, a 1/2" hole is four times the size of a 1/4" hole, so if you use a larger bit, make far fewer holes. The best way to calibrate a hygrometer is to wrap it up in a wet bath towel for an hour, and then unwrap and adjust so it reads 99%.
I've long recommended those in very dry or desert climates to run a cool mist humidifier in the room the terrarium is located. You don't have to pipe it in, just run it in the room to raise the ambient humidity to 50% or higher, and your terrarium will easily maintain mid to upper nineties.
Also, make sure your perlite isn't packed down tight. If it is, it can't work. Rake your fingers through it from top to bottom to fluff it up. You want your perlite very loose and airy so it can evaporate the moisture it holds into the air. The more surface area of perlite, the better it works. Make little mountains and valleys for best results. RR

My ambient humidity is 59%/66% (min/max for last 24 hours).
I actually have much smaller holes, drilled a lot of 3.5mm holes. Just widened some of them to 6.5mm (1/4"). I may have had a little too little perlite. My FC isn't very big (50 liter). Doubled the amount of perlite also - to ~ 1.5dm.
The perlite is not packed, I tried to fluff it up as much as I could.
Checking my hygrometer in a wet towel at the moment. It's up to 92% after about 20 minutes. I have no way to reconfigure it though, it's a lousy digital thing. Says in the manual it only goes up to 95%.

Yeah, I'll make a PMP tomorrow or at least for my next batch. Now when I know I like this hobby I can invest some more money in it
