not unless you've got enough cakes to afford losing a few as you master the learning curve. if you've got pf-style cakes, i'd suggest letting them do the 1st flush as is, to ensure some crop. then crumble & case the cakes afterwards.------------------
your mileage may vary.

Try half and half. I myself the first time i ever cased , I just broke the cake up with a gloved hand and put it in a tupperware container. I put about 1/4 inch vermiculite on top and put it in a small fish tank. Every day I would spray one squirt from a fine misting spray bottle onto the side of the fish tank. In about two weeks, I recieved 7 fruits, four of which were full size. Years later, I have come to love the use of straw and have massive crops. I guess it depends on how much of a crop you want. I have had my largest crops with straw. But then again I have had some nice ones with just casing cakes to. ------------------ "IT's two in the morning.....Do you know where your flashlite and paper bag are?"

I would use the sea of shrooms tek.Basically case in a bunch of solo cups using a half of cake each cup. If you get contaminations you only loose half a cake and throw it out. I also would bake the casing material at 400 degrees for about 45 minutes to try to steralize it. I did this on my last batch and am on the 5th flush! On the previous batch I did not and lost all after the first flush.

I tried casing my first 2 times and each time the cases were over run with green mold.Thank god I did some cakes each time, or I would have been realy discouraged. At the moment I'm doing straight cakes and just harvested 1st flush. 9 cakes = 125 grams wet. More than enough, with more on the way My advise is to do cakes the first time. /gadget

PF's cake-casing technique is really simple and a good way to begin. Go to the PF website and scroll down till you come upon the Double-ended cake casing tek.?Angel

casing is not difficult at all, and they produce way more shroomies than cakes do. so my advice is go for it, boyyyy.

i would recommend going through the cake routine a few times to get a feel for the mushrooms and how they grow... it's kinda difficult to explain why this is important, but you'll know what i mean when you get there. if you do want to give it a shot the first time around, do like a dozen jars, birth 8 of them and make a bunch of small SOS or maybe shroom wizard casings out of the others. this way you can't lose a whole lot to contams and you'll probably get some nice results anyway.

casing is the way to go I must say. Cakes are fine and dandy but for the fatter harvest, casings rule.
