I got a free laptop from my work buddy. It's his WinBook from circa 2000. The specs are as follows:
Pentium III, 800 someodd mhz 128 MB ram floppy drive modem 20 gb hard drive
I have xubuntu running on it right now (it had windows ME on it)
The right ram is 30 bucks or so for another 128 MB. Is that even going to do anything though? I'm not trying to start spending money on this old machine
Oh and can anyone throw out some OS choices besides a command line only system that would work well on an old shitty computer?

nothing i love more than a free laptop. Mine isn't top of the line, but i didn't pay anything for it.
AND it still takes notes in law school just like everyone else's two thousand dollar laptops.

What objects are you proposing to yourself? Are they the objects you really value? If they are not, you are cheating yourself. I don't meant that if you chose to pursue the objects you most value, you will attain them; of course not. Your experience will tell you that. But success in getting after much labor what you really don't care for is the bitterest and most ridiculous failure." -George Santayana

That's not a bad machine.
My first year in college, I used a thinkpad 600e - 300mhz cpu, 64mB ram, 10gB hard drive.
It was a great little machine, and it made me realise you can do a lot with limited resources.
My thinkpad could play DVDs, handle all internet content, handle office software and even play some awesome games.
In terms of OS choices, does that mean you're not happy with Xubuntu?
Windows 2k will run comfortable on that machine if you strip it down a little. You can grab an ISO from p2p and it doesn't have any activation. It's still a fairly solid OS.
Any linux distro should be OK if you use a light window manager. Fluxbox is very light, I like it. Damn Small Linux would be very snappy.
Upgrade the RAM, it's definitely worth it. Memory is a very easy thing to upgrade, but it makes a huge difference to system performance.
Does the machine have a PCMCIA slot? You could throw in a cheap wifi card for a few bucks.

Yes, it has a slot for a wifi card, I saw one on newegg for 18 bucks I'll have to grab
Xubuntu is doing the job now, it runs the xfce destop manager..it's pretty solid, but runs slightly slow. I'll def. buy some more ram though
