I bought it as it resembled my t. pachanoi seedling pretty closely:

The color and type of spines are almost identical. But this new one does have a bit more "fur" with its spines.
I checked out some pics of t. candicans, it does look like it could be that. But all the t. candicans I saw had more ribs... http://www.cactuslove.ru/big_foto.php?imgid=4295

yup your probably right when u say its not candicans... my bad, that wasnt wot i had in my mind...
remember that spine length and number of ribs dont count for shit at the end of the day... plus u are comparing very young specimens, they could change dramatically in appearance when they grow up

Mitchnast is my hero:D That first rating rocks too. Thanks for the ID. :lol. I was really hoping that it was a tricocereus, but anyhows it does look like something that could be good as grafting-stock. (I'm sorry about the spelling. I'm drunk as fuck)

crazy, I diddn't know that i would know.
I just applied it to my system of elimination.
anyone can do this, it's easy,
look at the cactus, its columnar. you can see it has a low rib-count and is lightly-long-spined, roundish-ribbed and non-glaucous, verry fuzzy, but not hairy areoles.
it's available in the mainstream so its going to pop up fast if you know how to search for cacti with those characteristics.
ME? i just go www.columnar-cacti.org and scroll through all the different genus' available, and it shows several of the more popular species of each, i narrow it down to about 3-4 genus that MOST share the morphology, then i do a google image search for each until a cactus exactly matching the one in question pops up, then i look up that species indicated to verify that the one pictured is indeed a representitive of the species. This is how you "UTFSE" heh heh.
but yeah, you STILL do have to know what subtle traits are important.
this is really the same way I learned to ID mushrooms.
all you need is a little lingo and a good eye for distinguishing details.
total process took like 5 mins. and i get to look at lots of cacti pics.
Caripari, BTW is one of those cacti that grows like a big-ass tree.

Nice try. Looks like it has wolly areoles on the top? If yes, it sure is a Pilosocereus gounellei, or 'Xique-Xique'. Great on its own, and probably as well as a rootstock.

thats what i thought at first...
or at least i went looking towards Pilosocereus in general, but im reasonably certain this time about the ID.
Pilosocereus gounellei tends to have a higher rib count even when young, like much of its genus, not to mention pronounced tufts of wool, I've had one before, and ive also seen many of the cacti posed as ID in this thread (usually at walmart), they are always of a lower rib count and fuzzy in the areole, but not wooly.
I dont see the wool youre refering to either.

One good hint is the spines structure - compare it to other Pilosos and you´ll notice the similarity. Compare it to a P. azureus for example, it´s the same 'signature'.

Yeah this is a tough one. P. gounellei has some degree of V notching on the areoles...
