enough air exchange?
    #7463460 - 09/28/07 08:48 AM (16 years, 4 months ago)

AFOAF recently purchased an air pump to save him fanning the box, which is awkward to get to. Trouble is, he has an 11 Gallon tub and stupidly bought a 57 L/h air pump as opposed to the recommended 78-115 (PMP tek).

I'm figuring it shouldn't matter as it's still replacing more air than 3-times-a-day fanning, right?

Also, the lid isn't airtight, it's just a shitty big tupperware tub, so there's no need to make airholes in the top is there? Just let the air get out through the loose fitting lid...

One more question :P

He got 2 big-ass airstones and a splitter for the tubing, but seeing as it's only a 57 l/h pump, it'd be better to just use one? Or does it not really matter?

Perlite btw.

Cheers guys

it'll matter, most growers soon find out that exchanging too much air (beyond what your box can handle) is a really good way to destroy your humidity levels. you can solve this by putting the air pump on a timer.

i would place some holes at the top, and maybe some in the middle, to ensure that the co2 will leave. as stated in other threads, co2 is heavier than air, and in a still environment, will sink to the bottom. since the air will continuously be mixed within the box, at the top and sides are fine. or no holes and just let the box ventilate itself from its improper seal. you honestly wont run into much problem in this area.

and more bubble rods/air stones are always better, since thats what actually helps to create humidity (of course the perlite, lava rocks, etc that you have in there are also doing the same).

so in summary, your one main problem that i foresee is too much air exchanging, ruining your humidity levels. otehr than that, everything sounds ok.

If CO2 was heavier enough than air that it settled to the bottom, we'd all be dead from CO2 poisoning on the surface of the planet. CO2 mixes with the air. To get rid of it, you exchange the air in the terrarium. You can't simply drill a hole in the bottom and expect it to run out like water. CO2 is found high in the atmosphere, not just at the surface. It's the same in your terrarium. In a completely airtight container, the CO2 would sink to the bottom. Such is not the case with our growing containers.

I have the same problem with loss of humidity cause of too much FAE , BUT i am am using a ultasonic and adjusting my Rh level is as easy as changing my timer settings
