Had to put my cat down today
    #7462704 - 09/28/07 12:34 AM (16 years, 6 months ago)

The poor thing stopped eating and drinking last week. Intially I wondered if he was upset we changed his diet because we had to start giving him wet food to mix in special powder to help his diet. Went to the vet yesterday and we were told his kidneys were failing. He had already started the slide into organ failure and hadn't looked like his normal happy self all week. We were asked if we wanted to put him down that day, but we wanted to spend one last night/day with our friend of 14 years. They gave him some fluids to help him feel a bit better, as he hadn't eaten/drank for a few days. It was the first time I had heard him purring since his kidneys packed in, but I knew it wouldn't last.
Spent all night with him and didn't sleep. He's normally not allowed to sleep in our rooms, but I let him snuggle up with me on my bed the entire evening. He didn't look very comfortable towards sunrise; very wobbly, drooling a lot (with slight tinge of blood in it) and you could smell that something was dying inside him. I managed to get some sleep after sunrise when he got up to try and go to the toilet (to no luck), then he slept at the entrance to my room.
Woke up feeling absolutely awful and very nauseous. This continued all day and I could barely eat something light like a banana. The realisation fully hit me in the last hour of his life and I haven't been this upset for a long, long time. Basically this is the first time I have lost someone/thing extremely close to me.
He was very calm on the way to the vet, and didn't struggle at all when they finally injected him. I gave him one last look in his eyes and told him I loved him. It was very peaceful and I'm glad he didn't have to suffer longer than necessary. But also very strange to look into his eyes and realise he can't see me anymore. :frown:

His name was Ginger (but he didn't really have a name). He was a stray that showed up one day when he was 6 months old, 14 years ago. No one claimed him, so we gave him the life he never thought he would have ended up with. Such a random chance event (call it fate if you will) that led him to us, but no one else. I'm very grateful he showed his cute face on our property that day. I will miss his extremely loud purr, and his slightly fat tummy which he would display while lying on his back in front of the fire.

I'm glad he no longer has to suffer. But I miss him already.

Hey, I'm really very sorry for your loss. I've never lost a cat, but I have two now and I imagine it will be devastating when they go. They are such powerfully spiritual animals.

If it's any condolence, I am quite sure he's out surfing the energy structures of the universe as we speak. (Infact, I think he just found me in a dream and woke me up to read this...)

Edit for pics: Awwwwwww. Damn. He's cute.

Just so's you know, I think his spirit lives on. See my recent post about our new kitten... he has (sorta) similar markings. And if there's one characteristic I would mention about him, it would be his remarkably loud purr. He sounds like one of those fucking radiation counters...

Yeah, he used to love tripping with me. Or at least coming up the driveway to greet me when I came home tripping or drunk. He always seemed to know when I was nearly home. And whenever I was feeling bad (sober or trip wise), he always poked his head into my view to check on me. Always made me smile at the end of the day with his insane cuteness.

i am so so sorry to hear about that

i had to put my cat down last year and it was the saddest day of my life but it was definitely the right thing to do

thank you for giving it such a wonderful life, who knows what would have happened if you never took it in

cats are such wonderful creatures

it's strange waking up and having something that has seen you through at your worst and best, and has always been there, is no longer around

it'll be tough for a while but stay strong and continue to love what you have in your life

maybe down the road you'll get another cat or pet which is what i did and it helped tremendously to lift my spirits back up

stay strong

Hey, I love the ear pic.

I actually have one remarkably similar to it of my first cat's ear.

Let me see if I can find it...

Edit: Well, it's kinda similar anyway.

Thanks for the kind words. It made me feel better seeing him so peacefully accept what was happening; it made me feel like I did the right thing. It would have broken my heart even worse if he had put up such a fuss. He knew his time was up, you could tell from the way he was acting.
I'm glad I was there for his very last moment. He was always there for me even when I was really shitty and not in the mood. One day I hope to get another kitten and start again. You never know, another stray may pop up and I will be able to do it again. It felt far better than just buying a kitten from a store, because he knew I was a good person. I never know why or how he ended up on his own, but I'm horrified that anyone would abandon such a friendly and gorgeous cat.

/me snuggles you

i'm sorry babe. he's in a better place now. like i told you the other night, renal failure is very painful and you definitely made the right choice. i'm glad you stayed with him at the vet, it's a very hard thing to do, but i know he was happy to have you there and that he loved you very much.

i still see Ozz peaking in the kitchen window sometimes, just out of the corner of my eye and when i take a second look he's gone, but i know it's him and that he's watching over me and i think your kitty will always be with you too. it's always hard to lose someone you love, but the pain will pass, i promise. i only wish i could have met him, you know i always wanted to. he seemed like an awesome kitty from everything you've told me over the years, and i know he was happy to have someone special like you in his life.

i wish i could be there to cuddle you right now. just know if you need me, i'm here for you.

I'm sorry for your loss.

I went throught the same thing with the male cat that I had several years ago. He had the same thing going on and for some reason his tongue was constantly sticking out during his final days. I don't think I was actually in the room when they injected him but I remember hearing him cry a little bit while they were doing it so that got me kinda upset. But I'm sure they both have more salmon than they can shake a stick at now.

I really sorry to hear about your loss.

My cat is 16 now, and is very slowly losing its marbles. More and more his behaviours getting a bit loopy, and I'm pretty sure h's soon to be on his last legs. I will be incredibly sad when he goes, he's a moody and stubborn cat but that's why I love him!

And thank you for giving Ginger a good life that he may not have had.

Ginger was pretty stubborn and moody sometimes too. Almost like a pet version of myself hehe. He used to live in the goddamn kitchen, hoping for some treats.
Make the most of your time with your cat. It was only the other week when I was wondering how long he would last and I started being extra loving towards him. I'm glad I did.

As many have said, im sorry to hear about your loss.

I too have dealt with the loss of an animal. Had to put my 7 year old dog down due to lymphatic cancer. It tore me up, i was a wreck for a week. The worst thing was, there was nothing i could do. I wanted so badly for him to stay around, ignorantly thinking that he would get better. On the day before we put him down, he was so tired, could barely get a breath. He would always run to the gate when i got home, but that day he walked 2 steps and collapsed.

I knew it was the right thing to do, but it never makes it any easier. It still brings me to tears to this day.

Anyway dude, just thought i would share, and know that as time will pass, things will start to improve. The first few days are always the hardest.

damn that sucks.

I don't know what I would do if I lost my cat. what sucks is, I know it will happen eventually. My cat is 8. Almost all my parent's cats that I grew up with are dead. The oldest lived to be 21.

hope you feel better, maybe find another cat after a while.

Oh.   I'm sorry.

This stuff sucks so bad.  Losing pets is horrible.  It's seriously worse than losing people sometimes.  This is why I don't want to get a pet because when it dies I'll bawl like a little kid.
