he's not trying to sound like the dead, he's going for a bluesy rock and roll type sound he said in an interview

Hows the rat dog scene? Ive contemplated driving a few hundred miles to see them play but so far I havent been economically inclined to.
EDIT: For-The-Love-Of-God, Bob please come see us in the Mid-west, were not all bible fanatics. Maybe I should move?

I don't know about the scene, but Ratdog puts on a hell of a show. I can't wait to see them again.

I've seen Phil n Friends a few times, its always been a great show, tons of energy, dancing maniacs, overall a great party. I can't say whether I like Jackie Green with the band since I haven't seen him live. But I have heard some recordings. From what I've heard Green is a hell of a vocalist but his guitar playing is sort of mediocre, seems a bit stuck in the blues feel.
I saw Phil and friends a couple years ago when Trey was playing with them and Joan Osborne was singing. That was probably the best show I've seen by any band. Just ridiculous.
If I had a choice though I'd rather see Ratdog, especially when Mark Karan comes back into the line-up. Ratdog to me, seems like a more modern dead show. They have their rock moments, jazzy moments, reggae grooves, and good ol' straight up Dead style jamming. Very tight band, very cool arrangements of classic tunes.
Phil has a much more rocked out sound, the guitarists (not Larry though) tend to use a lot of distortion, which to me is detrimental to Grateful Dead songs. You don't really hear that with Ratdog. But I should say that Phil and Friends with Trey playing shakedown street was orgasmic.
I don't pay much attention to the scene if by scene you mean the parking lot. I get my doses and some balloons and I hang out with whoever I came with. Seems like the scenes get more and more sketchy every year, no matter who the band is.
