Why I joke so much on this forum
    #7460949 - 09/27/07 04:05 PM (16 years, 4 months ago)

1. Many years ago I started to outline some REAL follow-along Spiritual Exercises. The response was underwhelming. The CLEAR message was that people (in general) would rather chat than do any work.

2. Every time a REAL topic is advanced, there is so much ignorance as to how to debate that the threads rarely go anywhere.

Let's take astrology for example. If there is a real-world affect on people it can be demonstrated and pointed to. If not, then the belief should be discarded. Unlike discussions of God, this one CAN BE TESTED and VERIFIED or DISCARDED.

A REAL DEBATE should be able to come to a DEFINITE conclusion as the efficacy of astrology is NOT an opinion like preferring chocolate over vanilla.

What do we get instead? Tons of anecdotes and "I feel this way..." That is fine for a chat board, but not a real philosophical debate forum.

Hence I joke, cause there is little real interest in substance.

In general I agree with you and is why I kid around a lot also.

But.

There are serious and beneficial topics and discussions that crop up from time to time and are worth serious consideration. It is interesting to me that you do not for the most part take part in these discussions. So IMO, in some ways you are very much like the people you seem to be pointing a finger at.;)

This is a forum where debate is encouraged, but this has NEVER been a serious philosophical debate forum where formal logic is bandied about. If it was I would have never come here. Not all good discussions have to be debates. That is just one type of discussion, and often it is not the most productive type.

That is the normal extent of 'debate'. Real reasons are rare.

Sooo, you have to make yourself laugh to keep from crying.....?

I have to make myself laugh because sometimes I have so much ignorance as to how to debate....
I don't grasp some ideas, but I try to understand that which I don't....
Does it help....?    I dunno~....     There are a hell of a lot of different ideas out there....
Not too much debate goes on about Engineering here (where I would maybe be good at), so mostly, I just like to play....  :ohwell:

It is the internet, to me, it is ALL entertainment....  Like much of life....

Remember, Philosophy is not ALL about debate....
But, a good intellectual dramatic debate always catches my interest as a spectator....    :tongue2:

I sometimes detect a little 'Well I don't believe it, so this conversation is just a joke' in a thread when there are other people who are taking it seriously. I think it's best to be mindful of others and their interest in the topic at hand when you may not feel the same way.

I think that your point is totally bogus. Really, you can't be serious!

as an example, let's pick that topic. I am assuming your stance is that astrology should be discarded. If that is the case, then i would ask whether or not you are dismissing the fact that astronomy was born from astrology. I believe that would open up somewhat of an endless loop, much like religion.

Now, astrologers (not astrology) can be debated, verified and discarded - but not the entire field. That is a bit ridiculous.

Astronomy was 'born' from observing the movements of the stars and planets.

Astrology was just some made-up crap based upon nothing.
