pressure cooker modification/idea and question
    #7460786 - 09/27/07 03:12 PM (16 years, 4 months ago)

I have a 16quart pressure cooker fairly new just used it one time... i wanted to get a pc with a gauge on it but couldnt afford it at the time. Well, my first time using the pc i over pc'ed my rye grains and now i do not wanna do this again...

i have read some threads and was even given a great explination on how to properly use a pc but to me there seems to be to much room for error!!!

So with that said, i came up with an idea that will make things easier for begginers... the thing i do not like is once you get your rocker rocking once it hits 15psi, you can sit there and try to find that sweet spot to keep the pc at..

I have a volt meter, my volt meter has a spot where i can add a tempature probe too it, that came with the meter... i still have to find out how much that probe will read up to but i thought 400 degrees but will ask the previous owner tonight... well, with this said. my meter is broken, so i can only use it for tempatures.. perfect!!!! so i am going to attach this probe to me pc without any holes. just a very stong bonding agent that once it hardens it hardens like metal... so i was told by the guy i got the meter from. he makes beer brewing machines like the 3,500 dollar ones and those use high temps... and his own personal machine he has that setup with so i know it will work...

he said all i have to do is attach the probe to the side of the pc use some tape to hold the probe to the pc while applying the bonding agent... let it sit for 24 hours and all good to go... i was wondering do you think placing the probe in the middle of the side of the pc or on the side but towards the bottom?? i wanna say the middle but need opinion..

my 1 question, is it possible to add a pressure gauge to a pc lid if it doesnt have one???

good luck
my personal opinion would be to get a new one.
modifying a pc seems a bit risky.

Yeah. It seems like you have a good plan. But if I were you, I would just buy a new pressure cooker with a gauge. I definitely would not try adding one onto the old one. Get an all american, they rock. Good luck, and if you decide to modify, be careful.

im not going to cut holes or drill holes i am just gonna attach the probe on the outside side of the pc... this way i can monitor temps... so once i hit the 15psi and i start to lower my temp down i can monitor where i stand degrees wise and i can know when to stop without over doing it or underdoing it...

i just wanted to know if it were possible to add your own pressure gauge to a pc lid without there being a problem or risk... since i cannot do that i will just add the probe..

also, what is the tempature we want for pcing at 15psi?

Hey man, I saw your other thread and the problem was that you cooked the jars to long. No mods needed.

Start with the burner on high. After the rocker starts rockin' turn it down to medium, maybe a little lower. Thats when you start timing, 60 minutes is all you need.

Good luck!

The outside of the PC will run 120F to 220F, depending on how thick the metal is. My AA-921 runs 121F when it reaches 15 PSI. After an hour of operation, the outside of the PC finally reaches 215F. The corresponding temperature to 15 psi is 250F, but that's on the INside of the PC, not on the outside where it's exposed to room temperature air and much cooler.

If you have an infrared temperature sensor, point it at the rubber plug if you use an All American PC. It will read 240F to 245F when the PC is at 15 psi/100 kpa.

One thing. Water boils at a set temperature at a given amount of pressure.

For example, at 1 atmosphere water boils at 100ºC and will never go above that temperature, the lower the pressure the lower the boiling temperature.

So if your pressure cooker reaches a set pressure you should know what temperature the water is at.

From Wikipedia.

"Most pressure cookers sold in the U.S. have an internal pressure setting of 15 psi, the standard determined by the USDA in 1917. At this pressure boost relative to sea-level atmospheric pressure, water boils at 125 °C (257 °F)."

Why would you need to measure temperature, only timing should be an issue.
