At first, I did not notice the blue lights.
And then I decided to follow the new state law and pull over to allow the emergency vehicle to pass.
The police car did not want to pass; the police car wanted me to stop.
When I rolled down the car window, the Murfreesboro Police officer explained that I had been going 43 in a 30-mph speed zone. The area was the intersection of Middle Tennessee Boulevard and Main Street, and I had been traveling on the new four-lane section of Middle Tennessee Boulevard between Mercury and Main.
The officer noted that the speed limit for the street had been posted, and the city had receive numerous complaints about speeding in the area.
Since I was not in a position to argue with traffic radar, I did not try to contest the stop. When the officer returned from checking my driving record, he announced that I only would receive a warning rather than a $118 ticket.
I thanked him for his consideration in the matter and took the warning.
The incident has made me much more observant of the speed of my car as I travel the highways and byways of Murfreesboro.
I already had begun to note my travel through yellow lights in anticipation of the possible installation of stoplight camera systems that also will give tickets for speeding and running the lights.
Avoiding the law
Violation of traffic laws is not really unusual. Many people give themselves a 10-mph buffer for posted speed zones.
The urban or suburban myth is that police and state troopers do not write tickets in that buffer. I was out of that buffer with 43 in a 30-mph zone, but that really does not prove much.
Many people also give themselves leeway with consumption of alcohol when they are driving — thinking that such rules do not really apply to them.
Based on my discussions in my classes at MTSU, many young persons also think that drug laws — particularly those involving marijuana — do not apply to them.
All of these routine illegalities come to mind because of the continuing debate about immigration and particularly illegal immigration.
Some people dismiss any extenuating circumstance of those who may be seeking a better life for themselves and their families by simply saying, "They are illegal."
The illegal immigrants did not follow the rules to enter the country. Perhaps at the moment they thought that the health and well-being of their children were more important than the technicalities of the immigration laws.
Many of us tend to forget the technicalities of the law when we speed down city streets or run the yellow and red lights because we think our priorities are just a little more important than the technicalities of traffic rules.
Illegal immigration raises many important questions about use of national resources and national security, but it also raises many questions about racism and cultural bias.
For many of us, however, illegality, as beauty, is in the eye of the beholder.

Re-read it until you understand it.
"Some people dismiss any extenuating circumstance of those who may be seeking a better life for themselves and their families by simply saying, 'They are illegal.'"
is like saying "just stop smoking and give up the reform effort. It's illegal."
