    #7452679 - 09/25/07 05:27 PM (16 years, 4 months ago)

While on a hunt through one of my favorite spots I found these strange guys...
ID#1
Habitat: Dead tree

Cap: 3-4cm across, slightly tacky, smooth, orange.

Gills: off white, not attached.

Stalk: roughly 4cm long. dark at base becoming lighter towards cap. no veil. thick.

Spore print: brown

Comments: The mushrooms had a metallic odor, flesh of the lower portions of the stems became blue immediately. Membrane of the lower portion of the stems became very dark brown on handling. No other bruising noticed.

Im fairly certain regarding this one, but ill throw it in anyway and you guys tell me what you think...

Habitat: Rotting wood

Cap: 10-12 cm across, orange/yellow, smooth with very slight scaling.

Gills: not attached. orange/brown, crowded.

Stalk: Thick, fibrous, partial veil evanescent.

Spore print: rust

Comments: beautiful anise like odor VERY strong. very thick flesh. Bruising brown. slight green/blue tints on various places (you can see some in the pics)

Check the spore prints to see if they're orange, but those greening ones are probably some active gyms.

those all look like gyms to me. the second specimen looks like a textbook example of gymnopilus juniosus. (aka spectabilis).

the first just looks gnarly. i dont know what it is but it does look active. id get a spore print if possible.

I am pretty sure #1 is Flammulina velutipes (enoki), even though he said the spores are brown.  If the spores really are brown then it is something else, but the gills are white even in the mature specimen, making me think the spore print is actually white.

Pics 2 and 3 confuse me a bit.  I assume they are supposed to go with species # 2 rather then species # 1, right?

Doesn't really look like a Gymnopilus pin due to lack cortina / white gills, doesn't have that cortinariaceae look to it.

Sorry, been out all day. Anyway, no i definitely didnt color the stem lol. i wouldnt have tried eating those first ones regardless of opinions, as they seem too likely to be some sory of variation of g.autumnalis. The second pics are definitely gyms, im 100% positive of that...I AM however perplexed regarding their subspecies. I went to the general area i found those in and found an immature troop of G. spectabilis today, and yes, it was bruising blue!!! unfortunately they were roadside and I had to be quick about picking a sample, i might have done a tiny bit of damage to the mycelial network, but hopefully not much. I will return to pick most of whats left in a week when (hopefully) they will be nice and big.

(you can barely see it, but there was some bluing in the areas i circled

yes, they were def. Flammulina velutipes. i didnt get to do a real spore print on them, and was basing the spore color off of spore residue that was on the stems...which must have been tree fiber or something. Of course if i had and intention whatsoever of ingesting them I would have taken them home and gotten a few prints. I only brought them up because of the green bruising. (which again, wasn't marker :P)Thanks for helping!!!!!
