Is incubation really worth it?

About how much time is really sliced off by having the colonizing cakes heated, than by having them at room temperature? (i.e. approx 21C) I wouldn't be asking this if I had more money to burn, sorry :\

Sacrebleu,
While incubating at room temperature works, it does take a LOT longer, even rogerrabbit says about 22-25 days. From my experience trying it this way, 23 days it took for 1 half pint of F+ to colonize, and that is FROM LIQUID CULTURE.
So my control group, Pints of F+ strain on organic rye berries, using the SAME liquid culture, in an incubator set at 80*F, took 6 days to FULLY colonize.
I can finish a grow, from inoculation, to spawning, to recolonizing, to fruiting and first harvest, in 22 days flat.
So, A WHOLE lot of time is actually sliced off, upwards of 2-3 weeks.
NOW, there are dangers to using an incubator.
get it too hot, and you run the risk of breeding other contams faster, like bacterial contaminations LOVE a hot incubator, so if your incubator is above 80*F when empty (it'll heat up to about 82*F when myc starts to really take off) you're running a a good chance of growing more then just myc.
so,
just be sure if you choose to use an incubator, do it smart, no heating pads, as that's a fire hazard.
Build a "Tub in Tub" (TiT) incubator, set your aquarium heater (fully submersible) to about 78*F, no higher then 79*F, and you should be doing jars up and done in about 6 or 7 days.
that a big enough difference to convince you to spend the 16 dollars on the aquarium heater at walmart? and the two tubs, (depending on size of incubator you want), at 10 bux a piece?
I built my TiT that is HUGE, for 30 dollars.
that's a great investment in my opinion. to shave up to if not more then 2 weeks of your cultivation time.
OH and the submersible heater from walmart, that's 16 bux, is for a 5-10gallon aquarium is ALL THAT YOU NEED, it has an auto shut off at 78*F also, which is UBER handy...
in between the tubs, there is about 4 gallons of water TOPS, so a large submersible heater is not necessary. The small auto temped 16 dollar heater is simply perfect. I have been using one for 2 years now with no problems, the heater before that, i dropped and it shattered, that's the only reason i had to get a new one a few years back.
ALSO if you do build a TiT, be sure every few weeks to stick your fingers down the side in between the tubs and check your water level, you should be able to UNFORCEFULLY stick your fingers in between and feel water, if you don't add water until you DO feel it, and add a half cup of bleach to the water, or it will get SUPER FUCKING FUNKY.
good luck!

it really depends on what your room temp is... if it's cold or you want faster colonization an incubator can colonize jars much faster.
the fastest colonization temp for me is 81 degrees F.
If you are hurting for $$$$... there are other options rather than using an incubator. You can put a box of jars on top of your frig, freezer, hot water heater or in a cabinet over the top of your stove or frig.

Funny enough, my room temp average here lately is about 80.5F, just because it's so goddamn hot outside.

just a mad idea,
Attach the exost port from your computer with some tubing to a blanket and shove your jars under that blanket.
cost, ducting.... inless you don't use blankets workable? and if so, who ever does that lazy man computer controlled recliner centered system just could add another modual and never get up ever again.

If you're in a hurry, or want fairly consistant colonization times, or want to maximise colonization times, then yes, it is worth it. After finding an alien egg in mine while changing the water , I decided to no longer use an incubator....

You could also (safely of course) use an incandescent bulb and a cabinet or cardboard box. Just cover your jars in a blanket and put them in once you get the right temp... most likely you will have to make it cooler in there... just open a flap a little or open the cabinet door until you read the right temps... but that's a little risky, fairly unreliable, and super ghetto. SAVE UP and build an incubator, they are an awesome, safe, reliable asset!!
