Quart jars

The quart jars I have are not completely wide-mouthed. They narrow a very small amount at the top but enough to make it so that cakes won't slide out. My question is: I plan on crumbling up the substrate for a monotub after scooping the substrate out with a (sanitized) spoon (since it wont just slide out) and I was wondering if the scooping would be ok.

Eh, possibly. I'd be worried about bruising/ripping up the myc, basically being too rough with it.

Thats what i was worried about but people crumble up their substrate in say ziplock bags all the time so I figured careful spoon work or even hand (with gloves) would be alright. Any other opinions?

It's fine. What are you using for spawn? I know for grain jars, hitting the jar against a tire works great for breaking things up. (This is why I keep a spare tire in my basement ). I'm not sure how well this works with brown rice flour though.

It wouldn't work with BRF but I don't see how scooping it out with a clean spoon would be any more destructive than the act of breaking it up in the zip-lock.
Of course I'd only use qt jars for some sort of grain of seed though.

You could fruit them right out of the jar.. put some casing over the top and mist away.

With such a big jar wouldn't you want to cover the sides so you not trying to harvest a fruit growing up and out from half way down the jar?

Thanks for all the quick replies. I am indeed using WBS and I don't really want to do an invitro fruiting. I have had really poor results with invitro fruiting and fruiting straight cakes in a FC. Now I want to give monotubs a try. So the consensus im getting is that it would be fine?

yes. alcohol + spoon = perfectly fine. i have done it many times. i think the tire method is easier, but not everybody has a spare tire in their house.
