    #7457574 - 09/26/07 08:53 PM (16 years, 4 months ago)

and my roomate knocked it over and broke it at the stem.

i left the stem planted in the soil and took the top of it and put it in water.

Think any of it will live?

Put a humidity tent over the part you're trying to root. There's a good chance it will root. The only thign I am concerned about is that you're starting the rooting process right after it went through the trauma of a trip and when it has to acclimate to a new environment. The best thing you can do is what you're doing. But the tent is essential. Also, be sure to keep it at about 65 degrees F in low light so that it doesn't lose water quickly. You never know though, the bottom may also continue growing. If there are any leaves still on it, you're probably in good shape. Treat it the same way as the other piece as far as neutral temp and light.

did you try taking the top half that broke off and dipping it in a rooting hormone solution and planting that?

no need for hormones...

so the original plant is the part with no leaves? and the part that has been broken off still has some leaves?

either way: with or without leaves, both should survive and regenerate...
ive rooted stem cuttings without leaves and also had many plants which i cut back to a single node above ground level, and they bounce back just fine

so the piece i put in water. it eventually died.

the other piece ended up kind of re sprouting from the soil. But the part that broke off is now beginning to rot.

what do i do?

i can't tell if the two are attached, but I am sure that they are.

won't the rot just spread and eventually kill it? Or could I just re cut the top of it before it spreads any farther?

Looks wet.  Are you only watering when the top of the soil drys out?  It also looks like you have it sitting in a bed of Perelite?  I would arrange it so that the pot can drain freely.  If you are using the Perelite for humidity then I would raise the pot up so that it's not sitting directly on the Perelite... like put a coupla rocks between the pot and the Perelite.

If it were me I would cut that main stem off below the rot cuz the last node is toast, but I'd wait until someone more knowledgeable chimes in.

Hope it does well for 'ya!

in my experience it doesn't matter how many times you cut the black stem off it will keep turning black. My assumption is that the plant decides it no longer needs it so it sucks it dry...turning it black.
<---that is assuming all other conditions are good.

make sure your not over watering, as it looks like thats what your doing.

their are other reasons why a stem will turn black.

everyone has there own take on it so im sure others will chime in.

your little baby should be fine(long as humidity, light, and water guidelines are meet), in my opinion i wouldn't touch the black stem, you'll do more harm than good.

just stop watering it so much... let the soil dry out and allow some oxygen into the root zone.
there is nothing to acclimatise so u may as well not bother with the tray of perlite, its just keeping the soil over wet...

the new shoot looks healthy enough :yesnod:

every bag i have used lately has been full of wood/chips, they are n ot letting it decompost enough, this is one of the reason i stress to people not to use it for cacti!!

So, I read somewhere, not sure where, but i am thinking that I shouldn't have done this. I mixed a small amount of perlite and verm and put in in the bottom of the planter, then I transplanted the plant with soil on top of that.

Should I dump this, and re-transplant with just soil?

I also usually have a bag over it (with air holes) for humidity.

Please let me know if I am doing this wrong. I want this baby to survive. Its a pain in the ass trying to get a salvia cutting.

should the perlite be mixed in with the soil, or just at the bottom of the soil

Mixing it with the soil will help make it less compact and airy when wet and help drainage. It seems if it were sitting at the bottom it would retain moisture and keep the soil too wet sorta like a sponge would do.

I think that will work, sally seems to be able to survive in almost any matrix.
Cocos is the bestest I've tried so far though.
