poo + straw = expensive

i know you guys wouldn't reccomend anything other than shroomery sponsors,
but where is the best place to get some pre-pasteurized straw/hpoo?
the best deal i can find is 25$ on mycopath with another 15$ shipping

40$ for 10lbs of substrate is a bit stiff for me at the moment

what's a good way to go about getting some hpoo/straw?

what kind of horse poo to straw ratio am i looking at?

Just think about how much you'd have to spend to buy the amount of dried fruits you could get off 10lbs of poo/straw. The expence starts to look a little less steep when you look at it that way. I'd say 10 to 1 would be on the low side.

Go to a local farm with horses and ask if you can gather manure for your compost pile. I do it all the time with no issues ever. They happy to have someone willingly help clean their fields of shit. Go to your local CO-OP or Feed store and buy some straw/hay and cut it your self.

If you go with this method, it should cost you no more than 6 bucks.

Or you can go with coffee and coir. A brick of coir is about 5 bucks. Coffee grounds are free from star bucks or anywhere else that serves coffee.

This is the best way to go. Pasteurize all the materials your self and you will learn more, and save more money.

It isn't " necessary but it (and some gypsum) does help.

I'm not sure exactly how "far" a brick of coir will go but I know that people re-hydrate in in a gallon of hot water. A gallon of water is around 10 pounds so it won't weight much more than that.

If you want inexpensive and can't get free manure you can't beat coir. it's under $5 for a brick!

A brick of coir is good for two 12 quart sweater boxes if your doing a martha, or three buckets if you want to try a bucket grow. Thats with 3 inches of substrate per container which is what I have always done.
