Mentally retarded folk.

Usually I just to my best not to stare or giggle.
But today, This lady came in hauling around a retard. The main reason I even noticed is because this person was making THE most horrible sound, like someone dying with a large gash through their throat. Kind of like the intense moan of a Goul or zombie from a sci-fi movie. It made my stomache churn a little.
Looking up trying to locate the sound I found a woman probably in her late 30's frothing at the mouth, spit bubbles all over. Eyes both almost closed but def crossed. Hands clenched like she was going through some intense pain.
And to top it all off, she was being pulled around by a leach attached to her waist like an animal.
I felt really sorry for her, but at the same time thought why we would even keep something like that alive?
On a usual basis I care for all life, human, plants and animals. But this was pushing the line.
What is the point in spending recourses on something so useless?
PS:I apologize for my crudeness if anyone finds this to be insensitive, Please if you feel differently explain to me where you are coming from on this subject and I will listen with open ears.

I don't mind being around them at all. I actually really enjoy talking with & helping autistic/mentally retarded people. Its crazy how much they really do have to say. Reminds me of talking with a young child. Anyway.. yeah, same cases are really fucked up but for the most part, I don't see a problem with them living.

What if they cannot even form a word to tell you how they are doing? all she could do was froth from the mouth and make a death rattle/moan sound.

A good friend of mine recently became "retarded" after a drug overdose and while her family insists on keeping her alive, I feel it would be for the better if she was let go.
they aren't conscious really, they are a burden, and their organs can be used to benefit others.

That is the point that I would want to be killed, when I can't function or speak. If I could talk and operate on my own then I would prefer to live. But if I'm pretty much a walking collection of bone and muscle with no ability to communicate or know whats going on then no, I would MUCH rather be dead.

You guys do understand there is a rather large scale of mental retardation. There is also a huge range of other mental disabilitys. You can be considered 'mentally retarded' and still function fine in society.
When I worked with special Ed kids in school, most seemed all happy as hell, eager to learn and really fun to talk with.

So you say. Many of them actually are conscious. There's a big difference between Terry Shiavo and someone with Down's Syndrome. If you're talking about harvesting from people with learning disabilities, I'm going to conclude that you're a republican and leave it at that.

Honestly I felt the same way recently. I don't mind mentally retarded people...some look happy.
But the other day I saw this guy, being walked around by like a caregiver or something. Making the same sound over and over again like his brain was hurt or something. Kind of like what you described...a sound that sounded like they were in bad pain. I felt sorry for him...but at the same time I thought...why didn't they just kill him at birth. He looked like he was having such a hard time...would living like that really be worth it..I felt bad for thinking that but its so true.

Before:

After:

No problem Brug. One night when drinking patron and popping valium she overdosed. I couldn't tell you how much she had to drink or how many pills she had because I wasn't there. Her roomie who happened to be the one who had been prescribed the pills, freaked out and probably could have saved Erin if she hadn't acted so selfishly. She just hoped that Erin would snap out of it and regain consciousness; after 5 minutes (erin was probably beginning to gain brain damage at this point) she thought it might be a good idea to call Erin's mom and tell her that her daughter overdosed on drugs. Her mom didn't even pick up so she just left a message saying her daughter had od'd and that she should call her back as soon as possible, wtf? It wasn't until five minutes later that Erin's mom even got the message and it was her who ended up calling 911, not Erin's roommate.
Medics didn't get there until 20minutes later and as you can tell from the pictures, Erin will never be what she once was ever again. Her heart had stopped beating for 5 minutes apparently and she suffered 60% brain damage. She was in a coma for the first 5 months; today which is about a year later, has made minimal progress. She can see in VERY poor black and white vision out of her left eye, can recognize friends voices, smoke cigarettes with help (lol), and laugh.
The best she will ever become is someone who can lead a simple life at home and perhaps form simple sentences, but that will not be for many years to come.

It is what it is. I actually feel nothing looking at those pictures and reading the stories. I don't feel sad or happy. This person had beauty and what many dream of and destroyed it. I'm really inclined to say "Good" and "She should go fuck herself and die" but that's kind of dark and I'm not sure I really feel like saying that. I don't know what my response should be. I'm sorry for perhaps responding with a not so favorable response to someone whom you know but those pictures and story provoked a weird response in me and I wanted to articulate it.

We're all entitled to our opinion Stranded.
All of us are vulnerable and just want to be happy. Anyone who saw her at first glance would have guessed Erin had it made; money, looks, friends in high places, but deep down she was absolutely miserable. She never knew who her parents were and never actually felt appreciated. She went through life as some kind of vacant porcelain doll.
While some may think she deserved overdosing because of her stupidity, all she wanted was to be happy and she was desperate to achieve it.

We've all done stupid things. We've had addictions and rough times. All of us are fallible, vulnerable human beings. Some of us end up okay, some of us end up in serious shit. Why do the ones who happen to end up in trouble deserve the contempt of those of us who have made it through life okay so far?
When you guys fuck up do you think it benefits you or anyone else to have someone standing over you, telling you how you deserve your misery?

Ever heard of Savants ?
Autistic savant
Autism is a puzzling disorder characterised by developmental delays. A person with autism often has problems understanding the meaning and purpose of body language and the spoken and written word. They find social interaction difficult, confusing and scary.
'Autistic savant' means a person with autism who has a special skill. 'Savant' comes from the French word for 'knowing' and means 'a learned person'. A person with this condition was once known as an 'idiot savant', since 'idiot' was an acceptable word for mental retardation in the late 19th century, when the phenomenon was first medically investigated. Around 10 per cent of people with autism show special or even remarkable skills. For example, a person with autism, who may be intellectually disabled in most ways, could have an exceptional memory for numbers.
Savant skills are occasionally found in people with other types of intellectual disability and in the non-disabled population, so most researchers use the term 'savant syndrome' instead of autistic savant.
A range of savant abilities Around 10 per cent of people with autism show special or even remarkable skills. The skills range includes:
* Splinter skills - the most common type. The person, like an obsessive hobbyist, commits certain things to memory, such as sports trivia. * Talented skills - the person has a more highly developed and specialised skill. For example, they may be artistic and paint beautiful pictures, or have a memory that allows them to work out difficult mathematical calculations in their head. * Prodigious skills - the rarest type. It is thought that there are only about 25 autistic savants in the world who show prodigious skills. These skills could include, for example, the ability to play an entire concerto on the piano after hearing it only once.
Specialised skill In all cases of savant syndrome, the skill is specific, limited and most often reliant on memory. Generally, savant skills include:
* Music - the piano is the most popular instrument. For example, the skill may be the ability to play the piano without being taught. * Art - such as the ability to draw, paint or sculpt to high standards. For example, Richard Wawro is an autistic savant who is also blind, but his crayon drawings command up to $10,000 each. * Mathematics - for example, the ability to work out complicated sums in their head, or to calendar calculate (for example, work out what day it was on 1 June1732). * Language - in rare cases, the person may be unusually gifted in languages. * Other skills - such as knowing the time without seeing a clock, untaught mechanical skills, having an unfailing sense of direction or the ability to commit maps to memory.
The brain's right hemisphere Autistic savant behaviour is so far unexplained. However, researchers think it might have something to do with the right hemisphere of the brain.
The brain is divided into two hemispheres, left and right, bridged by a thick band of nerve fibres called the corpus callosum. While left hemisphere skills are involved with symbolism and interpretation (such as understanding words and body language), the skills of the right hemisphere are much more concrete and direct (such as memory).
CT and MRI scans of the brains of autistic savants suggest that the right hemisphere is compensating for damage in the left hemisphere. It seems that the right hemisphere of an autistic savant focuses its attention on one of the five senses - for example, if it concentrates on hearing, then the autistic savant may have a special skill in music. Research is ongoing.
Their skills may be reinforced It is thought that habitual memory centres of the brain take over from higher memory centres, which helps to explain why some autistic savants are like obsessive hobbyists who do the same thing over and over. Apart from habitual memory, other factors that may help an autistic savant to hone their special skill could include:
* The ability to focus and concentrate * The desire to practise endlessly * Positive reinforcement by family, friends and caregivers.
Every brain may have untapped savant skills San Franciscan neurologist Dr Bruce Miller recently discovered new savant skills in some of his patients who were undergoing a certain type of dementia. These patients had a type of dementia that affected the left temporal region of their brains (located over the left ear).
When the patients were given brain function tests, their results were similar to those of a young autistic savant. Researchers from the Flinders University in Adelaide were able to provoke new savant skills in volunteers by using transcranial magnetic stimulation to temporarily 'disable' the frontal temporal lobe. (Transcranial magnetic stimulation is a type of treatment for depression.) During the test, five of the 17 volunteers showed new and remarkable skills like calendar calculation. These studies suggest that amazing savant abilities may be lying dormant in all of us.

All I really have to say is that I really took offense to this topic. My older brother has down syndrome, and him and his friends are easily amongst some of the nicest people I have ever met. They may not be able to do things that you or I can, but I honestly believe they are some of the most sincere people on this earth. My brother always sees the good in everyone and I would be willing to bet is one of the nicest people you'd ever meet. While I do agree the whole lady on the leash thing is a bit drastic, imagine if that was your daughter or a loved one of yours, would you really just ax her off because she had a condition. Everyone has a soul, no matter who they are.

Oh absolutely man, Downs and other mental afflictions are just like physical afflictions and do not in anyway demean or devalue the people who are afflicted. I grew up with a Down's Kid in my neighborhood and he was part of the circle back in the day. One of the most vicious fights I ever got into was when a kid called him a Retard one day when we were at a park and I pummeled that fucking kid. My comments earlier were directly completely towards that model chick who OD'ed her brains out.

I understand but I feel this may be offensive to members with disabled children.
I'm going to close this for now, it may be better suited for another forum, or if I hear from pub members asking that I re-open the thread I will do so.
For now, my own opinion is that it may be offensive to people with children with disabilities.
Please pass your thought along to me via PM.
