NEW YORK (Reuters) - How do you keep a leader as verbally gaffe-prone as U.S. President George W. Bush from making even more slips of the tongue?
When Bush addressed the U.N. General Assembly on Tuesday, the White House inadvertently showed exactly how -- with a phonetic pronunciation guide on the teleprompter to get him past troublesome names of countries and world leaders.
i thought it was amusing, although it's probably common practice.

Common practice for a moron who can't even read a newspaper...
If Alex Trebek can learn how to pronouce every word of every question with near 100% accuracy, the fucking PRESIDENT OF THE USA should be able to memorize some names and countries...

Sadly, it takes more brains to get on Jeopardy then it does to become a US President

I'm by no means a Bush apologist, and will readily admit he's a dumbass
that being said, I think phonetic teleprompts are pretty standard practice for public speakers including newscasters and oscar presenters, etc etc...
I for one would request that shit if I had to give a speech with a bunch of foreign names in it.
I would need a teleprompter just to sing the national anthem, for fuck's sake.

Once you exercise this freedom you've lost all control over what you do, what is produced, and how it is produced. And in the end, the product doesn't belong to you. The only way you can avoid bosses and jobs is if you don't care about making a living. Which leads to the second freedom: the freedom to starve." - Tom Morello

My understanding from people who have run teleprompters in the past is that this is a really standard practice for most occasions, let alone something like an address from the president.

What does this have to do with politics? Bush is dumb because he cant pronounce foreign names? Give me a break.
Seriously though, what does this have to do with politics, activism or law?

what does it have to do with politics? It represents the intelligence and character of the leader of what used to be the example of freedom for the entire world (i say that with a grain of salt, realizing the "golden years" weren't so golden for certain races).
If you cannot see the link between politics and the background of the person leading the country you live in, than there's nothing else I can do.
This is a very popular tactic around here - once something is mentioned about the pres. all the bushies crawl out and pretend as though it's tabloid material.

I guess...
Personally, I dont judge people on speech impediments and pronunciation. Thats a close minded approach and a logical fallacy.
Are you saying that if somebody is intelligent they should be able to pronounce foreign names without help? I honestly dont think that you believe that. You are too quick to attack bush on this nonsense when there is plenty of worthy stuff to attack him with out there.

The President SHOULD be smart enough... that's the problem.
The POTUS should be intellegent enough to do a little college level memorization and retention of things THAT important.
If someone can't, then no, I really don't think they are smart enough to "lead the free world".
And it has nothing to do with his "speech impediments". They are related to, but seperate from his general lack of brainpower. The POTUS should seem superhuman to most people IMO...

don't get me wrong, i think that bush is a fucking moron. however, i fail to see how needing phonetic spelling proves the point.
knowing this though, i will certainly keep a closer eye on his speeches to look for fuck ups (i.e. calling australia austria and apec opec).

This is not unexpected given that prior to being elected president Bush was unable to name many world leaders in critical areas of the world.
"Hiller asked Bush to name the leaders of Chechnya, Taiwan, India and Pakistan. Bush was only able to give a partial response to the query on the leader of Taiwan, referring to Taiwanese President Lee Teng-hui simply as "Lee." He could not name the others.
"Can you name the general who is in charge of Pakistan?" Hiller asked, inquiring about Gen. Pervaiz Musharraf, who seized control of the country October 12."

Woah, it really surprised me that this is common practice. It seems to me that if a part of your job is to pronounce difficult words, you would want to take the time to learn to pronounce them correctly, but I guess that's not necessary. Huh. Really interesting to learn..
