The Dead is great, very talented, ect. I could probably write essays about them, but I'd never purposely play a Dead song to listen to. Except maybe Ripple.
I really don't like "jam band" music. The Dead's studio albums I like better than their live albums. I'm a music weirdo.

really??!
i can understand when people just arent into "jam" that much...hell it took me awhile to start getting into it for sure...
but you really do like their studio stuff better?..thats probably the first time ive heard that!
see i started "jammin" (haha) to phish back in high school thanks to my older brother...however, at first i really liked their studio stuff more too...id say this was most likely because i didnt have access to their MIND BLOWING live shit...now im a live junkie for sure.
dead, phish, string cheeseeeee...doesnt matter, i want it LIVE!
glad you appreciate the dead tho...even if you arent a jam fan, the dead still rock!

Well, it is just that on the studio albums you get the impression because they aren't Jamming, that they have to make every note count much more.
If music is math (wait, it is!) than to me A jam session is an equation like 8+5+7+6+2-8+4*7=.... while a studio album is taking that same equation and simplifying it, like algebra. I can see how this analogy would be backwards for some people; the people that prefer live stuff to studio stuff.
I don't prefer one over the other in general, however specifically, and when dealing with The Dead, I like their studio albums better.

Yeah, I agree. That lady can easily ruin the song. See often sings her lines at the wrong time or is of key. :[
That SIRIUS Jam On station has some good stuff sometimes.

There's Jam On (17) and the Dead Channel (32). Between those two, you can always find decent jam music.

estimated prophet is defiantly a early/mid second set tune with a very spacey jam and wicked leads by Jerry...
however in my personal taste, EP is not even top 3 for me as far as favorite bobby songs go............ 1)MusicNeverStopped 2)Throwing Stones 3)Other One

Ive contimplated what I would say if I was ever asked what my favorite dead song is. I have come to the conclusion that there just isnt a best song, they are all too good to choose one. But if I had to come up with a top three it would be: Help On the Way, China Cat Sunflower, and Fire on the Mountain...but thats just for right now.;)

lol, that's donna jean godchaux. her husband keith was the keyboard player for the dead from pigpen's untimely demise (RIP) until brent joined the band. every now and again, it sounds like she was really on - and when she was, her addition to the dead was amazing. but i'll agree that it definitely seems like she had quite some difficulties hearing the rest of the band and telling if she was in sync/tune with them listen to some jgb shows when he had donna & maria muldaur both singing (not sure of the exact years off the top of my head; sometime in the 70s, and a quick search on google would tell you the precise answer) - it seemed like having another female voice setting the proper tone really helped donna out, and together they helped produce some of the best jgb ever, imo. tangled up in blue with the two of them singing backup in the refrain tingles my soul.
as for estimated, i've actually really burned myself out on the song somehow (which is really rare for me with any dead song)... while i always dance my ass off when ratdog pulls it out, i tend to not seek it out when shuffling through shows on my computer.

Ohh yes. I don't know who the lead player for Ratdog is, but he burnt the place down on Prophet last time I saw them. Auto-wah psychedelia, ftw. Also Bobby is probably the best rhythm man I've ever seen.
