Lisa Gerrard.

Its kind of out there, but her voice really hit me on a certain level. She has this ancient quality to her voice. (and works with some of my favorite genres of music)

I've been saying for years that LOOPING is the future of music,
KT Tunstall knows how to work the petals and has a mad SEXSAY voice:

If you want a mad looper chick, St. Vincent aka Annie Clark's a lot more interesting than KT Tunstall. I can't get into that ho at all.

As far as I know, the chick I've dug the most over the years was probably Mariah Carey, been down with her since I was 4 or 5. These days she's not much to me, though. I'll just have to go with Björk or Cat Power, probably. "Always Be My Baby"'s still the most awesome song by a lady ever, though.

Nina Simone, FTW

One of the best voices ever, female or male, and her arrangements of existing songs are incredible. She only got better with age. I can't imagine my music collection without Nina Simone.

ella fitzgerald, hands down. check out the vocal solo in the middle of the song. if you listen carefully, you can hear that she is mimicking the phrasing of different instruments.

nice picks everyone.

I was going to try and post some tracks from "Court and Spark" by Joni and "tapestry" by Carol King.... but I never got around to it.

Joni was so diverse and if you listen to tapestry, every single song is unique and melodically amazing.

I would also add Janis Joplin I guess.
And Ella Fitzgerald.
Joplin isn't even close to the level of Fitzgerald and Holiday though.

Having seen her live not so long ago I wouldn't go that far. She was great, except when singing in English where that rich emotion she normally brings seemed to disappear....? Strange she didn't seem like that with Dead Can Dance (do I ever wish I'd seen them live.....). Still, Sanvean has yet to be surpassed IMHO.

Incidentally, Alison Goldfrapp is probably underappreciated...?

Singer/songwriter Emiliana Torrini composes an exquisite vocalic beauty, similar to the hums of Beth Hirsch and Kirsty Hawkshaw, making Torrini's innocence a delicate cast of luminous imagery. She is of Italian and Icelandic decent, but lives in England, and her cultural seascape is ever more inviting when her soft-spoken compositions are heard. She joined forces with Tears for Fears' Roland Orzabal to produce her first album Love in the Time of Science, which was released in fall 2000 on Virgin. Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson heard her cool, otherworldly croon and approved Torrini to voice the finale music for 2002's The Two Towers, and she followed up this cinematic achievement by releasing the soft-spoken but beautiful Fisherman's Woman in early 2005.

certainly not best. it's kinda hard to say "the best" when you haven't heard it all, and i've heard ALOT.

but off the top of my head, two female artists i really dig are:

beth gibbons <3

wata - guitarist for boris <3

not the best by any means... cept for beth gibbons
