I doubt that by itself is enough for a warrant unless he's already under investigation. It could however make him into a "person of interest" for the pigs to keep an eye on.

The exact rules change from location to location, and in some cases from judge to judge. I have a friend that married a NY Cop, and he said they have to have three different items to get a warrant. For example, observing known drug users going into the house, information from an ex-gf about what goes on in the house, and a buy from another informant from somebody in the house. Of course, it is easy for a cop to make up a stories about any of these to get a warrant. However, if they do so, and the warrant proves to be based upon false claims, then you can nail the cop for perjury (as he made those claims under oath). On the bright side, if the cops do show up with nothing there, the ex-gf is going to have some answering to do. Cops don't like being used by vindictive ex's

Perhaps it takes three pieces of evidence, but one credible witness will be enough to get a search warrant anywhere I've ever heard of.
If she is willing to testify that she has actual knowledge (i.e. she actually saw the grow) of the grow they will be able to get a warrant. Just saying that you know they grow or you heard that they grow isn't enough.

I remember watching an episode of "Cops" and something similar to this happened. A vindictive ex told the police her former boyfriend was going to be transporting x amount of pounds of pot in a trailer. He had a trailer hooked up to his truck and the cops pulled over and searched him. They did find a small bag in the glove compartment. Anyway the cops questioned him and asked why they got a report he was transporting pounds of pot. He said his ex was mad at him for something and probably made it up. The cops got him to call her up while they listened in and she admitted to him in a bitchy, vindictive, authoritative, voice that she did it to get back at him. They ended up letting him off with a citation and arrested her for filing a false police report. The cops were plenty pissed off when they didn't get their big pot bust they were expecting.

He was very clear when I asked. They don't have to have evidence, but they have to have more than a single witness to get a search warrant for a home for drug related offenses in New York City. As I said, the three things can be pretty easy to fabricate... many people coming and going into the home at odd hours, previous arrest/conviction for drug related offenses, etc. He was also very clear that this rule is for NYPD only and that other jurisdictions may be different.

they need some kind of intent or probable cause. if that girl went and told the police, they would sit her down and see what kind of mentality she is in, and if what she says is worth spending the money and time, which varys from state to state, county to county. Time and money.

A confidential informant, or some stranger who has only interacted with you a time or two, or someone who knows you have drugs but hasn't actually seen them or doesn't know exactly where they are probably won't cut it by themselves.
But if someone is willing to go down to the courthouse or police station and swear under oath that they have actual knowledge of your possession of drugs and their location is plenty to get a search warrant. I'd bet anything that that's the case in NYC too.
All they need is probable cause for a warrant. That is subject to interpretation by each and every judge. The cops are only limited by the most asshole, warrant happy judge in the county or city.
I think your cop friend was quite mistaken. Cops often have a very limited knowledge of the law, even though you would expect them to know more. Perhaps that's what the sargent told him that he wanted before he'd take it to a judge or something.

yeah, all they need is one CI to sign a sworn statement that he saw drugs in your house. thats it.
and a CI can be any of your buddies that got busted recently. A CI can be your best friend, up in your house snortin a line and smoking a bowl, yet still working for the police to get out of charges.
it really depends on the willingness of a judge to issue a warrant, but in terms of bare minimum 'evidence' they need to establish PC, the standard is pretty low.
