THE great grandson of Lord of the Rings author JRR Tolkien was cleared of drug dealing after telling a jury he was not short of money after the success of films from the book.
"The last three years for the Tolkien Trust have been spectacular," said 27-year-old Piers Crombleholme. "I have no need to sell cannabis."
He told Wolverhampton Crown Court he had banked £150,000 from the trust and ploughed £50,000 into the shop he runs in Hall Street, Dudley.
"I use cannabis, but I don't push it to other people," Crombleholme said in evidence.
"I was certainly not dealing in the drug."
He denied possessing the controlled drug with intent to supply and was found not guilty after the jury retired for just 80 minutes to consider the evidence at the end of his two-day trial.
Crombleholme admitted producing cannabis, possessing cannabis, ecstasy and cocaine and he was remanded on bail until October 29 for a pre-sentence report.
Judge Michael Challinor further ordered a report be drawn up into Crombleholme's financial circumstances with full details of his bank accounts.
The prosecution alleged Crombleholme had more cannabis in his possession when police officers raided his shop than he would need for personal use.
The officers also recovered 39 growing cannabis plants in various containers and they found £1,660 worth of the drug stored in jars and tins.
Anthony Potter, for the prosecution, told the jury earlier that police also found drug-dealing paraphernalia, including electronic scales and a number of resealable bags.
