Some fretting over cakes - smell
    #7450739 - 09/25/07 07:27 AM (16 years, 6 months ago)

I think my cakes, or at least one of them, smells like wine.

When I was rinsing them I noted that some smelled very mushroomy, and they all smelled mushroomy, but there was also a strong wine smell.

They are all sitting in the fruiting chamber right now though, and initially the chamber gave off a very very strong wine like smell

what should I do if anything? if they are contam and I let them grow, will it harm any other cakes? Right now I only have 3 going.

Could I heavily mist them with peroxide?

What do I need to be on the look-out for?

Do not mist with peroxide, it can hurt your myc just as much as anything else.

Look out for green spots and a further inhancement in the wine smell.

I threw out some birdseed today that was bad, it smelled like a strong wine/vinegar/apple mix. Deffinetly something decomposing, which means harmful bacterium, or whatnot. Only thing to do is wait though, if your cakes turn green, or brown, or generally not healthy looking, then throw them out. Maybe you should seperate all 3 untill you figure it out, if you have the means.

well when i just opened the FC to fan some fresh air in i was hit with a mushroomy smell

earlier today i gave the 3 cakes a very close sniffing and i really couldn't discern necessarily any wine smell, but this is contrary to the first very strong whiffs i got after the 24 hour soak

so if the new mycelium comes in all healthy, the mushrooms will be healthy,

a contamination due to bacteria, would it be very very obvious ?

Same thing happened to my friend today kind of. He opened the pot his cakes were being dunked in and they smelled kind of like detergent. We think the pot might not have been rinsed well enough. I hope there's nothing wrong with them but maybe it's a contam.

well, a user recommended for the soak i just fill the jars they are in with water, so i took them, rinsed them, then did that

now, if all else, a cake that pinned has a legit smell, and i am soaking it right now

i will put it in a little pouring cup thing affixed as a single chamber so that if all else, i will have at least one cake with good shrooms if catastrophe happens, somehow these 3 create a massive contam-fest and corrupt everything

but i think they should go okay.

now if i can get my LC to do without contamming......
