I don't know if this has been posted before, but I just wanted to share this... It completely changes the way I look at psychedelics, and could open up a whole new relm of understanding their effects.

Wow. I seriously thought of almost the same thing a couple years ago, but he actually did real research into his theory and it makes pretty good sense.

Some may feel it demystifies psychedelics, but then again it's a well known fact that it's just a chemical. And what it allows you to do is still mindblowingly out there.

Wait... I was just reading something, and I realized... if this theory is true, couldn't psychedelics cause nerve damage? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Excitotoxin

I think Excitotoxin only deals with NMDA receptors and AMPA receptors while psilocin and LSD work with the 5-HT receptors. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/5-HT_receptor
It is interisting to note however that DXM, Ketamine, and Nitrous among other things are all NMDA antagonists so I guess those could contribute to Excitotoxin. But what do I know, I'm no doctor or brain chemist.
As for the theory itself, it is very interisting. Infact me and a few friends were talking about something almost exactly like this last time we were tripping. We were using recursion rather than feed back which is a little different. We came to the conclusion however that somehow that the "normal" recursive way our brains process things (this is all speculation, we just kinda assumed thats how it worked at the time) was screwed up and either not realizing it reached the base-case or never making it there.
anywho thats just my 2cents
*Edit* After actually rereading the wiki page on Excitotoxin, I don't think DXM, Nitrous, or Ketamine will cause it. They'd actually stop NMDA and kainic acid from binding to those receptors by doing it themselves.
"Excitotoxins like NMDA and kainic acid which bind to these receptors, as well as pathologically high levels of glutamate, can cause excitotoxicity by allowing high levels of calcium ions[1] (Ca2+) to enter the cell."

I'm bumping this because out of all the theories I've read, this one seems to hit closest to something that is pragmatic, scientific, simple yet also capable of explaining the huge variety of subjective experiences that are taken away from psychedelics.

Explains how you can sit there for what feels like an hour thinking about different things, and have it only have been like 10 minutes.
