Jack Straw: We made a mistake on cannabis [UK]

Jack Straw: We made a mistake on cannabis
September 25, 2007 - telegraph.co.uk

The Justice Minister, Jack Straw, became the most senior Labour minister last night to speak out against the decriminalisation of cannabis.

He told Channel Four News that he was against downgrading it to a class C drug.

"I was always against it, let me say, I can disclose this now, reducing the categorisation of cannabis from B to C, I thought that was an error," he said.

"I'm glad to know that we are now looking again at that. I don't think decriminalisation would work.

"I'm happy to have a debate about that, but I'm absolutely clear - what we know about cannabis now, more than we did even five and 10 years ago, is the way it can lead to very serious exacerbation of mental health problems."

Gordon Brown, in his conference speech yesterday, promised that the Government would be tough on drugs.

Last month, he indicated that he was ready to reverse the downgrading of cannabis.

He told GMTV: "It is the message you send out.

"Why I want to upgrade cannabis and make it more a drug that people worry about is that we don't want to send out a message - just like with alcohol - to teenagers that we accept these things."

The reclassification announced by the then Home Secretary David Blunkett in 2001 came into effect in 2004 and meant users no longer faced arrest for carrying small amounts of the drug.

Following criticism of the decision and claims that stronger strains of cannabis were causing a health threat, Tony Blair ordered a review of the law.

But in 2006 the review rejected the argument for a return to class B status.

Mr Straw's son William was arrested in 1997 aged 15 and given a police caution for trying to sell £10 worth of cannabis to an undercover reporter.

Mr Straw was then Home Secretary and had taken a tough stance on drugs.

The shadow home secretary, David Davis, said last night: "This is yet another Cabinet minister performing a U-turn on policy pioneered over the last decade.

"Labour's lax approach to drugs, 24-hour drinking has wrought havoc, fuelling crime and anti-social behaviour at great cost to the public."

Maybe he should have spent more time being a better parent and less time being another nanny of the state.

Decriminalization can work, legalization would work better.

Jack Straw is an evil bastard--shot his buddy down, and he's a cannabis hater to boot!

Gotta love the Britties and their lovely little skunk-scare bullshit they've been pulling over there ever since pot was dropped to Class C.

Metal health problems, jeez. HERE'S AN IDEA. IF YOU HAVE A MENTAL ILLNESS, DON'T FUCKING SMOKE POT. It's really that simple, and why this guy gives two shits if some tit goes crazy because he smoked a doobie of "skunk" (which is supposedly over 3 million times more powerful than any other form of marijuana and can cause people to turn into complete psychopaths) against his doctor's advice is beyond me.

Doctors tell you not to do things all the time, and most of the time you still do, but just because they're bad for you, some powerful government regulating agency doesn't always come and make it illegal. Just look at cigarettes and alcohol. If it was really an issue of being good or bad for the people, they would be making virtually ever form of processed food, most soft drinks, cigarettes, alcohol, and just about every piece of technology we use on a daily basis a crime to possess or produce.

Honestly, radio waves being constantly beamed through your fucking head from cell phone, television, and government surveillance satellites is more harmful than smoking a joint every now and then.

Jack Straw from Wichita cut his buddy down,
And dug for him a shallow grave and laid his body down.
Half a mile from Tucson, by the morning light,
One man gone and another to go, my old buddy you're moving much too slow.
We can share the women, we can share the wine.

Jack Straw is an insipid, spineless cunt trying to brown nose the daily mail and Brown, a more apt surname for a politician I couldn't come up with.

LOL.

Now I'll just have to sling 10x more bud on the streets and up my prices.

Thank you government for allowing me (the evil drug dealer) to extort my honest hardworking customers, as there is added risk in our already shitty market. All of the bud over here is adulterated, it doesn't have sand or sugar on it any more, but something similar which doesn't taste of anything / doesn't crunch. All of our 1/8ths weigh 3.0 at the most and cost £25. At the end of the day, the only people standing to profit from this whole ordeal is the drug dealers. Harsher laws means bigger markup.

Legalisation is the only way to rid us of this 'organised crime' business that thwarts our countries security.

The only mistake Jack Straw has made over cannabis is not making it legal, and giving government subsidies to grow it, and giving it to the 50 year old women that read the daily mail at gunpoint.

That sucks. Its illegal for basically just that reason alone - exacerbation of mental health problems. While alcohol remains legal, yet it kills peoples brain cells, destroys the liver and kidneys, etc. etc.

Plus, plants are pretty easy to grow, while few people would ever distill alcohol at home (just janky people who make moonshine). I'm sure almost everyone has at least one plant in their house.

I love it how these fucking idiot politicians in the UK don't pay one bit of attention to how successful the policy of The Netherlands is.
