and boot linux, will i have any trouble connecting to the internet right away so i can start figuring things out.
also, does nero work on linux? mIRC? folding@home?
i am assuming ubuntu would be my best choice for my first time yes?
also, I just burn these discs onto DVD-Rs using .ISO correct? an just boot it up in my pc and it will explain the rest?
sorry for all the newbie questions.. But if i get the answers that I am looking for then I am going to dump windows tonight and check out linux for the first time.
p.s. linux is faster then windows yes?

You probably won't have trouble connecting to the internet right away though it depends on your NIC, most linux distro's come with much more drivers by default than Windows. I'd say if you can connect right away from a fresh windows install you'll have no trouble with linux.
-Nero works, but it blows nuts, I'd recommend K3b -For Mirc I use bitchx -Folding at home I have no idea
I'd probably recommend Ubuntu it's a good choice for a first time linux user, and yeah just burn the ISO image, though not a data cd, burn it as an image if you didn't know that already.
Regarding how hard it is to install I'd say it depends on the distro, but for Ubuntu I'd say it's easier than windows. There's a good chance you'll just click a few buttons and be done, you won't have to install any drivers or anything.
When asked to make partitions I'd just make a root with ext3 at /, and a swap that is about 1-2gigs.
After your installed you won't have any mp3 support with Ubuntu and I'm not sure if you'll be missing alot of audio/video codecs or not, but if I remember correctly you need to look into a program called aptitude or automatix, I forget what both of those are, it's one of the two, or maybe both are useful I forget, but with that (those?) you can just search for almost any program, drivers, codecs etc that you will probably need.
edit: I believe Ubuntu comes with aptitude and automatix is another similar program that is better for getting videocard drivers and codecs.

windows - linux nero - k3b mirc - xchat f@h - f@h itunes - amarok
if you want to try ubuntu, that's cool, but let me recommend Sabayon Linux as an alternative. it comes with all restricted drivers and mp3/wma/wmv/etc support as standard

I would also recommend ubuntu. The installation is even easier than stated above. You won't have to even mess with disk partitioning if you have no need for a special setup, the default is fine.
Getting the system to play mp3/wma/... is super easy. http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Feisty#Multimedia_Codecs_.26_Browser_Plug-ins
getting your video drivers installed is even easier if you're running nvidia or ati, ive never used any others so i can't comment on that http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Feisty#Graphics_Card
I would also recommend ubuntu because
of the huge comunity http://ubuntuforums.org/
the amount of support and documentation http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Feisty https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToGetHelp
the idea behind the project http://www.ubuntu.com/community/ubuntustory/philosophy
and also ubuntu has me spoiled and lazy. I run ubuntu on all my desktops because its really fast to get setup and too easy to use. The system does about everything for you, most of the rest is point and click.

i tried ubuntu and burned an .iso
i can't get it to boot up. I changed my bios so that it boots from my cd-rom first then my hdd. but nothing.
maybe i burned the disc wrong. i burned it as an .iso image. i also had to make it an iso using Free Create ISO Image
if i put the disc in while windows is running and click on my disc drive, it says loading browser but then does nothing.
i partioned my windows with 30 gigs in a partition and 4 gigs in another partition. <-- this does not count for my windows partition and my recovery partition.
i am going to do a dual boot set-up so i can use linux and get used to it before i do a full swap from windows to linux.
i am using this tek. http://apcmag.com/6101/dualboot_windows_xp_and_ubuntu
is their any reason why i would not be able to boot ubuntu live cd?

if the comp is set to boot the cd, and the cd is burned correctly, it should work.
all i can say is make sure that it is trying to boot the cd, and that the cd is burned proper
and click on my disc drive, it says loading browser but then does nothing.
it sounds like a bad burn you could try this if you feel like it https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto

so i re downloaded ubuntu, and it would actually launch the application this time. But, it still refuses to let me boot it from the cd. If I open the cd it launches Ubuntu correctly. I just can't boot with it.

yes that's correct. You already said you had set your cd drive as the first bootable device, but it's obvious the disc now works, so that's the only thing left I could imagine would be the problem. When you boot up does it even try and read from the cd drive?

can you boot any other bootable disks? Maybe it's your burner or something, do you have access to another burner? Or try burning it at a low speed like 4x or something.

dont burn it to DVD, use a cd-r
also id recommend Kubuntu since it looks better, and seems to work a lot more stable.
you can always install the GNOME gui later i you want to see what default Ubuntu is like

in that case I'd recommend installing xubuntu it looks better (imo) and it's even less buggy and stable, but I'm just joking (well not really), but it's all up to your preference, as insectvhore said it's easy to install other DE's later.
It shouldn't matter if he burnt a dvd or a cd, you can burn any .iso to any type of media as long as it will fit.

i first tried burning the .iso as an image using a dvd-r, the software (nero) said i must use cd to burn an image, not dvd, so i then burned the .iso to dvd using the make a bootable dvd option, when it booted it came up with some screen i couldnt figure out what it was saying, finally i found a cd-r and tried again to burn it as an image, only then did it work

Maybe your right, tho I've used dvd-r's in place of cd-r's many times, so it can work. Maybe it's dependent on the burner or something though? I don't know, but yeah, you might as well give it a shot, could be the problem.

are you clicking that?
then just double click on the .iso file in the browse window that opens, and click burn
ensure your BIOS settings reads your optical drive before your harddrive
insert disk and reboot

try booting the disc on another computer or burning the cd on another burner, can you do either of these?
