I read somewhere that if you cut off the main stock while young on a poppy plant that it may produce a great deal more pods then if it had been left on. Has this been proven? Was thinking to testing this theory on some of my plants.

When a poppy "bolts" it often has only the one main stalk. Others come later. Poppies are fairly sensitive to damage. If you try it, try doing just a couple. It's a worthy experiment, though I've never seen it done.

our goats ate the top half of one of my poppies and it didnt grow very fast after that, smaller blooms.
the goats didnt run around much after that either usually they are feisty little buggers.
similarly, when i would cut pods from a plant to harvest seed, the plant would slow down a lot, and start to produce smaller pods.
i have only tried cutting one plant while it was in veg, and it spread this brown and black blotches all over the plant from the cut and died in a few days.
still, my plants that were left alone and fed fresh chicken shit had nearly 15 pods a plant as big as golfballs, the largest had 23, the chewed one and the harvested one only had 4-5 blooms, but mind you were also being fed miracle grow being as they randomly sprouted in an ornamental garden elsewhere on the property.
i am more than interested to know if its really worthwhile to "top" a poppy plant, as ive seen them turn into what can appear as a "bush" from just healthy feedings and lighter waterings once blooms appear.

So you can get more than one pod off a single poppy plant (with no topping)? I thought they all produced single pods.

I was averaging 15 pods per plant this season, haven't topped one yet.

Thanks for the read. To grow a decent batch of poppies, one needs to pay attention to: time of planting, spacing, amount of sunlight, how wet or dry the season is and what types of ferts are used.
Stem girth is no indication to the quantity of pods IME, I think the number of pods is determined more by their genetics and environmental conditions.
Thick meristems often indicate taller plants. Taller plants generally have larger but fewer pods. I wouldn't suggest cutting the main stalk after it's begun to bud, but for the sake of curiousity I will trim a stalk or two early next season.

a poppy plant doesn't produce just one flower.
