UAW Workers Walk Off the Job
    #7447582 - 09/24/07 12:46 PM (16 years, 4 months ago)

DETROIT -- United Auto Workers union members walked out of General Motors Corp. factories in the U.S. Monday morning after bargaining over a new national labor agreement failed to produce a deal by an 11 a.m. deadline – but union leaders said they planned to return to the negotiation table this afternoon.

The work stoppage was the first time in more than 30 years that the UAW has staged a mass walkout in connection with companywide contract talks.

In a sign of the complex forces at work in the Detroit auto industry, GM shares were trading higher Monday on the New York Stock Exchange, as investors cheered signs that GM management might be willing to resist UAW demands to sweeten the contract terms.

What the fuck does Universal Health care have to do with the United Auto Workers????

Idiots.

Soooo... does he get the same pay as union strikers during the strike? I somehow doubt it.

So are you oppossed to unions or general or just the UAW, and why?

I'm opposed to the concept of unions, not to the people in unions.

In 2006, Ron Gettelfinger (president of the UAW) earned $145,126 in salary and received $13,405 in allowances and official expenses for a total compensation of $158,530. In 2006, the UAW reported net assets of $1.23 billion. In 2006, the UAW spent $9.6 million on lobbying and political activities. There are 538,448 total members in the UAW, the lowest since WWII. The UAW paid its employees $90 million in salary in 2006. Its officers made $2.9 million in 2006, with 22 regional directors, vice presidents and other officers getting more than $100,000 each.

Agreed, but if talks dont resume its still going to cost GM an additional 8 billion in profits every month, if its wrapped up soon its a complete non-issue.

I dislike Unions. Great for when they were being abused by the corporations, now it seems to have done a 180. They earn more, work less, get more benifits, and still bitch, when they can be replaced with robots. Genius.

The UAW seems to not understand that GM is close to going down the shitter and the company can't afford to give the workers all of this stuff that they want. If the company goes bankrupt because they are paying their people $30 an hour with a zillion benefits then nobody is going to get anything.

From what I understood in the article, the UAW is not striking for higher wages or more benefits. In fact the UAW just made a concession to GM on the health care front that would reduce GM's payment to workers by $12 to $14 an hour.

Apparently the UAW is now striking for contracts that would guarantee some sort of job security, so their jobs don't go to Asia.

All I'm sure of is that globalization is screwing over the American worker. But when has the American worker not been screwed over?

This strike should help their cause....

On its Web site, GM stated that hourly workers at the company in 2006 received about $73.26 per hour worked a combination of $39.68 in cash compensation and $33.58 in benefits and programs required by the government.

http://media.gm.com/manufacturing/handbook/other_benefits.pdf

Those figures indicate that without benefits, the average hourly worker takes in $82,534.40 per year, or $152,380.80 when factoring in such items as health care and five weeks of vacation.

FUCKING INSANE! all they are doing is watching a Robot do there job!

Down here (san Antonio)  the Toyota plant workers average $44 in wages and benefits. (BTW the Toyota plant is going to be expanding creating more jobs!)

Hmmmmmmm $74 and hour compared  to $44

can you say cost differential! HUGE cost differential......plus the made  in America Toyota runs better than the made in china GM. (only assembled in America)

So it would seem. From the inimitable Scrappleface we see --

Quote:

Union Plan: Cut GM Profits to Boost Job Security

by Scott Ott

(2007-09-25) — As the United Auto Workers (UAW) entered their second day of a nationwide work stoppage against General Motors, union president Ron Gettelfinger hailed the success of his plan to increase job security by slashing company production and profits.

“Our union members deserve steady employment for life as much as the autoworkers of Europe do,” said Mr. Gettelfinger. “By not producing any vehicles, the UAW proves we can compete in the global marketplace with anyone…for example, with France.”

The union boss said the strike will “send a clear message to the corporate fat cats that their primary purpose in life is to provide employment, income and health care for 73,000 Americans.”

“If they happen to make some cars and profits in the process,” Mr. Gettelfinger added, “so much the better. But G.M. can’t take their eyes off the bottom line, which is lifetime job security for union members.”

A spokesman for G.M. said, “As our factories sit idle, and sales figures begin to dive, it inspires us to look for ways to reward the people who are crippling our company and to stop looking overseas for a stable, productive workforce.”

whats not funny is the ultimate ending.

Taxpayer Federal Bailout....

GM currently provides health and income benefits to 461,500 retirees and their surviving spouses. GM retirees and their dependents outnumbered the company's active workforce by three-to-one. This imbalance will continue to grow as more and more retirees are supported by fewer and fewer workers....

That's what the real albatross around GM's neck is. They are forced to pay for a bunch of shit for the retirees and GM just can't afford it. This is where unions cross the line; when they demand so much that they render the company unable to compete.

Do you think the UAW’s auto-plant shutdown and a looming state-government shutdown are more than a coincidence in timing???

In the state capitol of Lansing, a Republican legislative minority is at loggerheads with Democratic governor and staunch union ally, Jennifer Granholm. Gamholm insists on plugging the state’s gaping $1.75 billion budget hole with an 18-percent income-tax increase....
The GOP insists that the Dem's must give ground on teacher pension plans, health-care plans, and privatization issues.

Michigan is Fucked.

Not to be a dick but that's hardly anything for a man in his position. That's actually quite a reasonable salary I think.

GM-UAW reach deal to end strike

UAW union to assume more than $50 billion in retiree health care costs.

http://money.cnn.com/2007/09/26/news/companies/uaw_gm_deal/?postversion=2007092610

The Union bosses get control of $50,000,000,000 for retiree health care trust fund....

I thought this strike was about job security?

UAW President Ron Gettelfinger holds a sign demanding socialized health care, at a UAW rally.

"What the fuck does Universal Health care have to do with the United Auto Workers????"

Now i understand why Gettelfinger holds a sign demanding socialized health care.....

I work for a GM supplier and spend most of my time at the plant. I don't think the union has any place in this day and age. I mean I can see when it was useful back in the day when people were getting paid 10 cents an hour to work in the mines there's not much of a need for it today. These union people are so stupid they are just going to end up fucking themseleves out of jobs eventually.

These contracts run for only 3 years I believe and GM just isn't going to be able to afford to compete with the foreign auto makers if they keep doing shit like this. Its really pretty amazing what some of these guys get paid for just driving a forklift, a lot of the guys are makin $30+ an hour... I honestly don't understand how GM has been solvent for so long paying ridiculous wages like that, I think a lot of manufacturing jobs will be outsourced in the not to distant future unless pretty radical changes take place.

That being said I wish the strike would have lasted a little longer I could have used a few days off.
