self injecting inoculation ports

Okay the other day i was at wally world and went through the canning section... well, i came across new canning lids for the jars... not sure if there is much difference besides maybe there different color but there elite platinum lids and jar rings.. i bought 2 sets of 12 rings and lids for like 2.50 a set. there might not be a difference from the regular lids but they look pretty.
so last time my regular lids and rings rusted so I went a head and tried making my own self innoculating ports on some Plastic canning jar lids first try did not work well. i was going to sand down the lid a bit to give the silicone something to grab... but i never tried it since i heard you can just buy the self healing inoculation ports themselves...
the only problem with this is i do not wanna order them, i would rather get them myself, except i have no clue if any stores carry them like a walgreens or cvs or kmart pharmacy... any one know if they carry them or if there is something i can buy that already has them on it already that i could take off and use ?? is it just any type of rubber that i can use for a self healing innoc port or is it a special rubber? thanks

those elite platinum jar lids apparently rust easily, according to my friend. using RTV silicon adhesive on jars as self-sealing ports the trick is to place a blob above and below the lid/hole so the 2 bond together, neither can then fall off, etc.

i find puncture repair patches or even inner-tube, cut to size and glued to the lid works fine,at least for a few runs. scuff the lid to provide a key for the glue, and mark the patch with a pen so you know where the hole is. i haven't used RTV like hippie3, but many have with success.

Who exactly are you referring to when you say "fuck the dumb?" Seems like you're getting a little worked up in this thread.

RTV silicon simply doessn't provide a very reliable seal when used with the plastic canning jars. I would just man up and order some of the rubber stoppers found here if you really want something reliable for your plastic lids.
And for the record, rust isn't really ever a problem. Clean what you can from your metal lids after each use. Everything else will die in the PC.

he means it absorbs metals that it touches, which may or may not be true.
but since it only touches the lid of the jar which is food-safe since it's a canning jar his point seems moot, just nit-picking.

lol that's not what he means at all. I think he means RTV will drip some chemicals onto your substrate or they could rub off, causing mutations.

Was it really worth reviving a nearly 2 year old thread just to make an ass of yourself?
