Black Spots in Grain Jar - Safe to Case?

once upon a time, in a land far far away, there was a rye jar of brazilian mycelium. it had some black stuff growing in a few places, but the strong (and noble) mycelium overcame it. there are still a few black spores cast around and i'm not sure how the story will progress. will the village mycologist case this questionable grain jar since it is one of a very few jars he had left... or will he toss it in the compost?

well you can fruit it but..
i had the same deal, brazillians and all, black spots that seemed to spread then got beaten back by the mycelia i cased them and got trich right off it seemed like thought i got rid of it, but it took back over within the next day or so, only cut it back long enough for a flush
when i inspected the contaminated substrate i found that it was green all the way through which made me suspect that those black spots were actually our enemy, trich.
it's worth a shot, i would say but keep it isolated. completely.

I hate trich, But I also sympathize with how hard it can be to junk one of your first grows. Try it if you want but don't be to depressed if it goes "Tits Up." Before long, if you keep at it, you learn to toss anything that even vaguely looks contaminated. Not only do you run the risk of spreading the contamination in your growing area but it also slows the growth process considerably. Just my 2 cents

you can't really know until you fruit it, most fungal "contaminates" that we deal with also have rather convincingly similar white mycelium vegetatively and only the color of the spores and growth rates can tell us one way or another. As soon as you fruit it though, it'll sporulate rather quickly if it's a contaminate and you can isolate / toss it after that.
If losing the substrate in such a test is cost prohibitive, or you would rather be extra safe and not expose your fruiting environment to a possible contam, I'd say pitch the jar now. After all *this is* supposed to be the "cheapest" phase of the process when you're supposed to be the most willing to abandon any suspicious spawn material.

thanks everyone for the replies! i think i'll have this character dunk or spray the substrate with H2O2 to kill the spores, case it, and bless it with a growth spell.
the frog that lives in the bog keeps ranting that the spots are ergot and will make some amazingly potent fruits. i think he's just been licking a lot of toads lately. thoughts?
i took a picture, but when i opened my eyes, it wasn't there, sorry.

man just get rid of it, if it is something nasty your taking the risk of contaminating EVERYTHING, not to mention that shit is bad news if it gets in your resperatory system, just start over. do it right this time.

falling - as far as i know, H2O2 kills spores and bacteria. its apparently effective at controlling cobweb, though i didn't have much success in my dream.

ya i think you may be right, i think the chances of you killing anything besides cobweb mold with H202 are very slim thats why its usualy only refered to when ppl have cobweb mold.
