is it my substrate?
    #7446507 - 09/24/07 02:25 AM (16 years, 4 months ago)

im having trouble with my colonized jars i have 5 that are almost fully colonized vut the mycelium isnt bright bright white like everyother cake ive seen, i know its not contams because ive researched on cobweb mold wich could be it but grows too rapidly to be this problem, these jars have been colonizing at around room temp in the dark for 26 days, i can tell its mycelium because of the ropey strands but its not a solid vright white like a normal cakes should be, im growing b+ from spores101 and i ordered pre sterilized jars from mushbox, do you think it could be theyre substrate? the jars are like 90 to 85 percent colonized but not fully solid white and not contammed, anybody ever have this problem, plus the cake i fruited that was fully covered with mycelium but not bright white was a little fragile it seems easily crushable. ill try to send pics.

"plus the cake i fruited that was fully covered with mycelium but not bright white was a little fragile it seems easily crushable. ill try to send pics."

thats what caught my eye, a fully colonized cake should be like pulling apart an apple, not that dramatic but ppl who have know =]

if you smell the cake it should smell like a really earthy mushroom, not musky or sour

a few of my guesses
1 cobweb
2 a really really.......realllllllly weak substrain and will prolly not fruit
3 only the outside was colonized
4 the myc died lol

other than that its kinda hard to tell with out a pic

and for the bright white thing, i grew a strain of cambos for a while and the myc ALWAYS looked like cob but grew like a champ and always gave great fruit and was pretty damn contam resistent

and just to clarify you are growing cubinsis right? cause pans have weak wispy off white myc like your explaining lol

and heres what it should look like. but it doesnt its very tannish white.

its also very light brown but still alot of white like in the germination pic, why isnt my mycelium bright white? it could be spores 101 spores they might have sent me a weak strain like you guys said.

plus my pre sterilized substrate jars from mushbox look a much finer grain than that substrate pic.

So they were a little grey just because they were under hydrated?

did i say grey my bad its more a paler white like tannish white but alot of rhyzo ropey vain patterns and the whole cake is covered by myc but not a thick myc like i see on other pf cakes, theyre not contammed i know this for sure i guess they were just a little spent from colonizing for 27 days, time will tell and im learning patience.

plus its all covered and fully colonized but the substrate looks too visible which makes me a tad nervous.

I was thinking the same thing. Hmmmm Under hydration = off white mycelium?

it could just be that the mycelium is jus developing and since it's such a thin layer, the color of the substrate is showing through. my cakes aren't bright white until a good amount of the cake is colonized. then again, i've kinda been fuckin up, so.. yea.

i took my cakes out 12 hours later one of them was fine and still intact i noticed a color difference a bit whiter but basically same color plus it was a little fragile after dunking so i wiped it down with dry clean wrag and made sure it wasnt that mooshy

as for the other cake part of it was still uncolonized on the inside of the cake so i scraped off all non colonized parts and crumbled in sterile sandwich bag and put in my incubating chamber above my fridge, i dont have a incubating heater case the damn thing broke my cakes have been a constant 70 degrees for 27 days, i heard that above your fridge it emits heat so i moved my incubator there hopefully it will help heat my Incubating Chamber, i think the jar i dunked and put in FC has a soft core and isnt fully colonized on the inside wich sucks cause it has been a month since inoculation,

a few questions

1. will my crumbled cake in sandwhich bag start growing mycelium again so i can use it to case?
2.if i leave the cakes colonizing for another 2 or 3 weeks will they dry out and die?
3.do you think i should contact spores101 and ask them about this issue with weak mycelium growth because it may be due to the b+ strain syringe they sent me?
4. do you think these cakes werent colonized for long enough to produce a thick mycelium layer
5. i will send pics asap so we can stop guessing and have photo evidence of this problem.
6. and if its just developing a thin layer of mycelium in and out of the cake after 27 days how long do you think till theyre really fully colonized?

It may grow more mycelium, but since it has some uncolinised substrate it may be prone to contam, keep an eye on it and hope that it colinises fully.

Ur temps r most likely causing ur slow colinisation, u want to keep it in higher than that, idealy 80-82F.

If ur other cake is indeed fully colinised and now it had ben hyrdrated, it will take a day to recover and within a week u should start seeing some pins. Make sure u give ur FC FAE and keep the humidity up.
