Monotub colonizing for 1 week, pics, is this normal?

I feel like my Mtub isn't colonizing!
day 5:

day 7:

I don't see much of a change...
I followed monstermitch's tek of putting a "frosting" layer over the top with WBS, so that was the first thing that colonized. So I can't tell anything about the inside of the sub.
Everyone else's monotub looks really white, and its driving me crazy! What should I do? When should I throw a casing layer on it?

Maybe it's just me, but it looks EXTREMELY dry in there. You still need the right amount of humidity for Mycelium to flourish. what are you doing to supply moisture? I see the polyfill for gas exchange but nothing to replenish the lost moisture. Remember that moisture WILL BE LOST through the polyfill as well.

Aren't monotubs supposed to supply their own humidity?

lol, you didnt read the tek properly did you ?
they do supply their own humid environment, yes, but only AFTER theyr cased and everything.
for colonisation you are supposed to add a layer of perforated tinfoil directly over your substrate, so the moisture is conserved inside while the holes make it able to breath.
your substrate obviously dried out a lot and to answer your question, NO its not normal (if you wanna know if it should be that way) and YES it IS normal for how you treated your substrate.

that all depends on how much moisture was in your substrate to begin with. Was it at "field capacity". Could you squeeze gently and have drops of water come out of the substrate before you spawned? Once again, maybe it's just me but the "frosting" layer on top will be the first to dry out if you don't have the right moisture to begin with. (I wish Mitch would chime in)

I used MM's tek: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/6187363#6187363
He mentions nothing of putting anything over the substrate.

there you have it! Thanks Ohms! I'm not the official on monotub teks. LOL!

I had all my substrate in a paint strainer bag, squeezed pretty hard until when i squeezed the hard a few drops would come out, then I let cool down and mixed.
Can I save my substrate? Mist it once a day or so till it starts to come back, or am I fucked? I just started another monotub about 2 days ago, how can I save it?

place tinfoil with holes made by a needle over the substrate while its colonising, it can contact the substrate, no worries.
as for the other tub idk, mist it heavily, apply punctured tinfoil and see.

I haven't seen the tek, but there are some common practices in ALL CULTIVATION. Keeping moisture and having HIGH humidity is very much on the top.

Alright, how about this. Get a quart jar, sterilize it, open up my monotub, put half a quart of sterile water in each one and mix it up real well, flatten it out, and let it start colonizing again? Should I put tinfoil over it? I swear I have never seen a tek w/monotubs that suggests putting something over the substrate while it colonizes it. Seen it with simple tray casings but not monotubs, ahhh

NOOOOOOOOOOOO! If your subtrate is suffering moisture loss, it is from the surface. all you need to do is KEEP HUMIDITY HIGH. Do you even know what the humidity level is in the tub. NO Hygrometer? I would mist lightly often until the substrate has absorbed and recovered. I wouldn't introduce bulk water and stir things up. Your mycelium has already had a rough time, let's not make it rougher.

Good times then. I came home, gave em both a good misting (the oldest one more moist tho), and threw some tin foil with holes poked via a fork over the total surface. Is this what I should have done? Crits? Should I just forget the idea tin foil idea and just mist it a few times a day until it is fully colonized?

i've never used tinfoil with a mono tub.....i just grabbed to lids for the tub, one has a window on it for the light and the other is solid so once its cased it can stay in the darkness untill the myc comes through enough to put the other lid on so it can have light.... it sounds like you skipped the whole step of letting the myc recover after casing it...did you case it then put it in fruiting conditions right after?

best bet, remember your mistakes, discard the dry tub and cover the poo in the other one wiht the alu foil with the holes till 100% colonisation.

what the hell, just case it man.
This is my birdseed. it's about as dry as yours. This is also a frosting layer.

Then I cased it, with just a small amount of field capacity vermiculite, like 1/8th inch all over.

In two days I saw pins. Casing adds all moisture you need. By adding a foil layer, your are keeping FAE out, and it's probably not going to pin untill you take off the foil. Then it's still going to be dry and probably won't do anything.
CASE IT

anyone else have a problem with the size of the holes used in this monotub..they seem a bit on the large side for the capacity of the tub.. IMO
