okay here is the deal. i started up some rye last night i started to soak the rye in 50/50 water coffee mix... i planned on boiling and pcing the rye into jars tonight but i am thinking of waiting tommorrow night around 6 which would be like 48 hours of soaking is that too long? right now they have been soaking for 29 hours... i also added 1 tbl of gypsum to the mix as well... just wondering if 48 hours is too long ?? i checked the grain now and i see nothing sprouting yet... the reason i am asking is cause i will have to do two seperate pcings due to a large load

48 hours is too long at 48 hours you risk the rye seed itself germinating, which isn't exactly desirable

Thats bullshit
I soak grain for 48-72 hours, as long as the grain is fully submerged, it wont germinate. Also, if you add a splash of bleach, it wont get nasty till the 4-5 day.

I wouldn't worry about it, but you could.

Soaking doesn't really do much for hydration. It's when heat is applied where the true hydration of grain takes place. Simmer normally, as if you had soaked overnight.

I won't say that it doesn't do much for hydration, (because it does), but that is not the primary reason you soak. YOU SOAK because it coaxes the endospores to germinate. Nothing more nothing less! I soak for minimum 24 hours and just for the hell of it 48 hours. 24 hours is the "acceptable" time frame for endospores to germinate, anything over that is just ++++ I simmer for 30 minutes for the hydration aspect. I then drain overnight before Pc'ing.

to soak first put boiling water on ur grain. that will kill the grain and they will never germinate. i also do usually a 48hrs soak time 24hrs are not enough in my eyes. when you see it bubbling it is mostly done. i also do 2 time sterilize. take more time but so I'm sure. i prefer success than speed.

This is YET MORE bullshit.
Soaking does hydrate the grain, in fact, you don't need to boil/simmer, if you soak long enough.

NEVER pour boiling water on your dry grains. It will burst the kernels. Soak to hydrate slowly. RR

well, i went ahead and soaked for 24 hours but then i was freaking so tired at 11 i didnt wanna start something i couldnt finish nor mess up... so i waited till around 7 a.m. and i checked the rye bubbling was over.. i saw bubbling last night and now i am glad i waited cause i feel more of the nasties had there chance and now are gone... last night at around 9 was 24 hrs and till 9 when i actually started to boil was just about 36 hours and i am glad i waited that long so if anyone is looking at soaking time imo 36hours...
