straining rye

My friend is preparing some rye jars and he is curious how long it will take for boiled rye to dry out too much if its left in a strainer/collander for too long. His rye grains seem to keep drying out on him, almost immediattly after the moisture and steam has disipated. Is this normal, and is it important to load your rye jars at just the right time (before it gets too dry, not before its dry enough).

As soon as you throw the grain into the colander after its boiled, just shake it and the surface of the grain will dry, this is good. Then just load it up into the jars and PC it.

Sounds like he might want too soak longer. Does he have any berries that have "popped" before pc'ing? If not maybe he isn't boiling long enough. It helps to have the water boiling before adding the grains, and maybe even run some hot water over the grains before boiling them. 30min max?
