Chances of finding anything..
    #7444910 - 09/23/07 05:31 PM (16 years, 4 months ago)

Are they high? Not so good? I live in one of (if not THE) the most "shroom populated" states listed so I'm thinking my chances are as good as any. Here's the big question though - let's say I take off for a night and look for a some mushrooms. What are the chances I'll finding any? Given the date/season, would I have much of a shot? I'm not doubting myself, just wondering if it's worth crawling around in cow poop (I'm sure it will be if I find any ) for a few mushrooms. Who knows though.. I could find an entire field's worth.

well the only response to that question is use the search tool. The only way to know is to get out there and look, besides you probably made up your mind

Well I really just mean in general. Do people look year after year and find NOTHING? Like I said, out of general curiosity, how hard is it to find some? If I just scoured a horse or cow field with a light and bag, what are the chances I'd come across a good batch? I'm excited as anything and can't wait, but I just don't want to set my expectations too high..

What county are you in?

My favorites are weeping willows, which aren't really weeping at all. They're very wispy, witty and will dance in the breeze with you. Nothing like a tree that wants to dance with you. Although it doesn't like its thin limbs being pulled at all, it absolutely LOVES it when you walk through them, letting them gently slide over your face and shoulders. If you're naked, the willow considers it to be sex. It will orgasm on your mind and you will blow dream chunks into outer space. All very fun until your neighbor sees you.                                    -The Joekenorer

Honestly If you really get out there you'll be sure to find some. Just dont give up. Where are you located. I think you should wait till it rains like crazy then go out.

The mushrooms will find you. View it more as a spiritual journey than "ooh I wanna get high!"

its sounds cooky but it always works for me. Normally you should be out by mid October but this season Id be out there looking in a week 2 weeks.

They will rot easier in plastic because of the lack of air flow. It takes a couple hours or so, though. I've accidentally left some in a plastic bag and came back to liquefied mush. They will turn into an absolute goo-fluid that is completely disgusting and rather bad for the liver. Collect them in a plastic bag if you wish, just be sure they're not in there for too long. They will also stay in a refrigerator for a week or two (Not frozen, just refrigerated. AND not in a plastic bag or anything airtight.)

Paper bag is the best way to store them, in the fridge. IMO/E.

Please tell me why liquified mushrooms would be especially bad for the liver. I can understand that if they rot due to bacteria, then you will be at risk from that particular bacteria. But a blanket statement that they are bad for the liver? Why the liver? Why not the spleen?

It was just that, a blanket term. bacteria easily overrun the rotted shroom that they already live on, so become more dangerous. many of these bacteria will affect the liver, because its the means that blood is filtered of many elements. Not that its the only place that could potentially be harmed, just that it's in danger. Go ahead, dissect my post further. I know theres gotta' be something else in there I wasn't completely accurate and/or factual about.

> Please tell me why liquified mushrooms would be especially bad for the liver.

If they are liquified, they are rotting and you'll find a mix of fungi and bacteria. There will probably be all sorts of different mycotoxins in there, and you'll most likely throw up violently, then be ok in a couple days.

Many fungi and bacteria make toxins which attack the liver, its a matter of chance if those are growing in the goop. Probably dozens of species are growing in the goop. You also might get lucky and get a non-toxic one.

A week ago I found these Hohenbuehelia petaloides. I put them under a plate to spore print, but left them for three days. When I lifted the plate, it smelled kind of bad, and instead of white spore prints there were white puddles of spore water. I put some under the scope hoping to see a bunch of Hohenbuehelia spores, but instead I saw a chaotic mixture of hundreds of different kinds of bacteria, with no spores in sight. There were all different shapes and sizes of bacteria - rods, spheres, pill shaped things, long branched things, and everything in between. A real educational experience for sure.

> Go ahead, dissect my post further. I know theres gotta' be something else in there I wasn't completely accurate and/or factual about.

I got nothin, its quite accurate.

> Why not the spleen?

The liver has to detoxify the blood and therefore gets hit pretty hard when certain molecules are ingested. Many of these toxins (such as amatoxins) hit every organ in the body, but the liver is the most fragile one, the others usually can take the abuse.

Sorry, I was just wondering why mushroom mush is automatically bad for the liver specifically. I won't dissect any more posts. If I see something that doesn't quite make sense I'll keep my opinion to myself.
Like everyone else does.
