Why do US media and politicians insist Iran called for Israel to be "wiped off the map"?

When he never did? Coz of stupid US media and politicians? I can't stand reading that line every time Iran's Pres is mentioned somewhere. Oh well, at least that's something he'll be asked about when he visits Columbia University on Tuesday, and he'll get to correct those morons himself.
The Persian translates to:
"The Imam said that this regime occupying Jerusalem must vanish from the page of time."
or
"This regime that is occupying Qods (Jerusalem) must be eliminated from the pages of history"
Didn't the US regime just take out Iraq's regime? Don't they want to take out Iran's regime? Hypocrites and idiots is all they are.

What else would you expect from a world super power? If another country were in our place they'd be just as slanted. Its the curse of power. Someone has to bear it, and those without it don't get to choose.
I watched every speech of his thats been televised here, and I'm always shadowed with the idea of what was lost in the translation, or worse, whats intentionally lost in translation. Because I, like a very VERY large majority of America, do not speak any of the middle eastern languages.

People should research questionable claims, such as that Iran's Pres called for Israel to be "wiped off the face of the map," and not believe it till they've had it verified. If they can't verify it then they shouldn't believe it one way or another, as their suspicion doesn't hold the credentials to be fact.

Iran has very blatantly supported anti-Israeli initiatives over the years. The Hamas organization (which sends suicide bombers into Israel to kill innocent civilians) gets a lot of its money and weaponry from Iran. Iran also gives money to Hezbollah (not a terrorist organization like Hamas but they have still done some shitty things).
Iran (along with many other Middle Eastern countries) hate Israel and would like to see it destroyed.

The fact that Israel still exists is simply amazing. Of course we have the largest hand to play in that, because if left to the natural order of civilization it would have been extinct almost as soon as it was named.
Speaking of which, are countries of the world now prohibited from attempting to overrun eachother?

Yes, it is. If the Arabs had their way they would have overrun Israel and driven the Jews into the sea.

Well, there would be international condemnation and U.N. resolutions...but if the country in question can get away with it then there's nothing anybody else can really do.

What exactly is it that makes the Jews so undesirable? I understand the land they were given, but even before that?

Good question. There are a million theories. I've heard everything from that they tend to be an insular community which does not integrate %100 into their host societies to that they are inherently greedy and such.
Who knows.

They dont assimilate to the cultures where they live. After the first diaspora they lived in many countries around the mediterranean. They maintained their culture, language and way of life in spite of enormous pressures from their host countries. This, understandably, leads to resentment and hostility (espically when 'culture diversity' is not seen as the end all goal). This is why many believe they should have their own country, where their culture is centered.

The Jews were also negatively portrayed in the New Testament which helped foster an anti-semitic attitude in much of the Western world.

Yes I agree...they are hypocrites. But its all about alliances. Israel is an allie of the US.
I'm sure if theres someone you didn't like and you thought was an ass hole getting made fun of, you would be like right on. But if someone was making fun of your friend would you think the same, or would you get a little defensive?
I know its a stupid concept. But thats what it is like. Israel is our friend. Iraq was not our friend, Iran is not our friend. Just the way it is.

Again, it's the Israel regime that Iran wants to see destroyed, not its people, and for good reason - since Israel is an illegal occupier. Iran and its Pres are not anti-Semitic.
"Anti-Semitism in Europe has forced Jews to leave their countries of origin, but what they did instead was occupy a country which is not theirs but that of Palestinians. We are sorry for any human being killed in the two world wars. We respect Moses as we respect Jesus, but it is just unacceptable that the Palestinians should suffer from the aftermath." - Ahmadinejad
"We are saying that if the Holocaust occurred, then Europe must draw the consequences and that it is not Palestine that should pay the price for it. If it did not occur, then the Jews have to go back to where they came from." - Ahmadinejad
He is also not a denier of the holocaust. He makes the point that from whichever way you can look at it, Israel is not a legitimate state, and is inappropriately living on stolen land.

Theres a little truth in every bad rumor or lie, so maybe there's good reason to hate them, but we just don't see it. Or maybe its just a zealousy so ancient that it's almost genetically ingrained into everyone involved. So much of that region bases its politics on ancient religion that superstition is absolute fact to them anyway. Wow, that's a fucked up situation to be in. I can almost see how modern Judaism has been molded by this.

So, Iran shows great caring for Israel's citizens when it gives Hamas resources which are then used to intentionally blow up civilians. uh huh

Iran wants power. They want to increase their regional influence and their every action is indicative of that. Do I blame them for such aspirations however? No. It is only natural for a nation to want power. And in that pursuit the Iranian president uses Israel as a way to get the support of the average Arab and Persian on the street because it's such a hot-button issue.

That is debatable. And to be honest, I don't give a shit. I actually hope the Jews, the Persians, and the Arabs kill each other off in some big war so that we never have to hear about them again.

Its funny how lefties are so legalistic when it comes to "international law", yet when it comes to domestic laws they use there brain to decide what is right. You can use your brain to decide what is right in international matters as well. If a state is legal or not has nothing to do with what is right.

Well that's bias, and not right. Even among friends, it's wrong to to have biased relations. I don't think it's honorable or honoring to stand up for someone, friend or not, regardless of circumstance. When you do, you're simultaneously being an enemy to someone else, regardless of circumstance, and that's being idiotic. You can't bend morality.

Israel's situation is not right. If they deserve land then give them some land from those who persecuted them, don't take someone elses land to repay them. Now who's going to pay for the Arab's stolen land?

Nobody, they just have to deal with it. Just like black africans just have to deal with having arabs in N. Africa who stole their land. You cannot hold children accountable for the sins of their fathers.
And Im glad that you agree international law is not a worthy metric for anything.

In essence we should stay out of Iran's way unless it directly affects us. I agree and believe that we should stay out of everyones way unless it effects us. But then, how do you define an effect that affords our reaction? Invasion? Economical stress? Hosting immoral standards? terrorism? Where is the line where we should act, because all of these things are very closely tied together and are grey even to eachother.

Of course its not right. But its how it is. I'm not going to bullshit myself, if theres someone I don't like getting picked on I am going to not do a damn thing to help him out. If its my friend I will. Its the same way with countries.

So should we start educating America about these other cultures and civilizations, or should we just take the media at its word and follow suit?

Doesn't work as an excuse. The fathers are still alive, and palestinians who were moved are still alive and displaced. Not only is it an invalid excuse, it is a huge and hypocritical double-standard for all nations involved.

Britian carved up some land for the Jews. The Arabs got all pissy that non-Arabs were living there. They proceeded to declare war on Israel. The Arabs and Israel fought several more wars over the years (all when the Arab countries tried to invade or were about to invade). Israel kept some of the territory that it conquered. Also, Israel only responds when it has been threatened or acted upon. It currently does not initiate any hostilities.
You can't say with a straight face that the Arabs would do the same thing if they had the power. They would annihilate the Jews or conquer them and do all kinds of nasty stuff. I'm not saying that the Jews are %100 perfect but the Arabs would expel or slaughter them if given the chance.

What are you driving for specifically with this thread? Are you questioning the legitimacy of Israel's existence or are you questioning the U.S. media's coverage of the Iranian president's moods, remarks, and intentions?

I started with a statement which corrected out the erronous "wipe Israel off the map" propaganda line, showing what was really said (because I think it's important that people cut through lies), and then continued talking as other issues came up. I have no gameplan or greater goal beyond that. I'm just continuing to point out what I see as an unfairness in the Israel/Arab situation, tho I'm on no mission to prove anything.
Just passing time while figuring things out. Why do you ask?

Just wondering. Because it seemed as if you had a serious anti-Israeli bias and that might have been affecting your logical examination of said events.
So, the "wipe off the map" comment might have been misconstrued or misinterpreted. That still doesn't minimize the incredibly hostile policies of Iran toward Israel. It doesn't erase the incredibly hostile rhetoric that comes out of Iran in regards to Israel or the U.S.
And may I ask, if the Arabs had a chance of beating Israel in a war...what do you think would happen? Would the Arabs or the Persians show the Jews any mercy? I personally don't think so.

I have no reason to think that Iranians would not like to eliminate Israeli Jews, but I do believe that the American translation of anyone speaking a language that the vast majority of Americans don't speak, could easily be skewed in the favor of the translating party. Whew.
-------------------- My favorites are weeping willows, which aren't really weeping at all. They're very wispy, witty and will dance in the breeze with you. Nothing like a tree that wants to dance with you. Although it doesn't like its thin limbs being pulled at all, it absolutely LOVES it when you walk through them, letting them gently slide over your face and shoulders. If you're naked, the willow considers it to be sex. It will orgasm on your mind and you will blow dream chunks into outer space. All very fun until your neighbor sees you. -The Joekenorer

Ahmadinejad was on 60 minutes tonight, I'm just watching the vid now. The reporter's a fool, but Ahmadinejad's answers are good.
