To mix or not to mix...
    #7443835 - 09/23/07 11:37 AM (16 years, 4 months ago)

Okay so I've decided to take the leap from BRF to WBS. While I've been waiting for colonization, I've been thinking of an easily accessable, beginner friendly substrate.

The other day at wal-mart I got some bagged manure for 1.22, but after reading on here I realize that it is probably less than ideal for various reasons.

to make a long story short I've pretty much decided to go with wheat straw from micheals crafts instead of poo. Originally I was going to go the poo route, but I don't want to mail order it and i just plain dont want to deal with moving a bunch of Hpoo around my brand new car and into my apartment.

My question is, since I already have the manure, do you think it would be a good idea to mix a small amount of it into the straw for added nutrients, or is it not worth the mess? it seems to me that sraw is very easy on its own, but once you start adding other things it seems to get more complicated witrh the moisture content. Is adding compost going to make a huge difference or is it better for a beginner to just stick with the basic straw tek?

id mix it for sure, or even just use poo.
straw isnt bad, but poo is just better.
almost all bulk substrates can be prepared in the same manner, so one isnt easier than the other on that level. some are just messier than others. as it turns out, poo isnt that messy. not like other substrates.

as for moisture content, if you go with the hot bath method, in a pillowcase...you simply hang it up to drip dry, or place on a elevated rack outside or whatever, and gravity provides the perfect moisture content for you. after about half a day of cooling and dripping, you simply grab the substrate in the bag, mix with spawn, and lay it out, or whatever your method of spawning might be.

okay so I'll probably add a small amount of it to test it then.

maybe i'll do a couple of small batches to see which mixture works best.

I'm just worried because the bag says "earthwyse composted manure" without giving any other details. I've read stories on here about how its possible that its steer manure which is high in salt, or fungicides could be added, plus the consistency is usually not ideal.

I guess the only way to find out if its ideal is to add a small amount and try it...

If it's store bought it's cow shit. You should not only mix with A LOT of straw, but also consider buying a brick of Coco-coir to hydrate and mix with it, and also as much used coffee grounds as you can get. Pasteurize it VERY well.

But yes of course test it first. The only things holding you back are fungicides.

I'd just do the straw. Chop it up and get a few flushes and call it good.
