Culturing Cordyceps on Agar
    #7443800 - 09/23/07 11:22 AM (16 years, 4 months ago)

I'm about to start a little experiment with a friend of mine, we've been hearing and reading about these Cordyceps everywhere recently. Supposedly the active compound cordyceptin increases energy by 30 percent, lowers triglycerides, lowers bad cholesterol, raises good cholesterol, and all kinds of cool stuff. So I've been researching growing methods for this stuff. I've found a few reports by reputable pharmaceutical company's. From my understanding throughout the world what is used medicinally is not actual fruit bodies, but solely mycelium.

So heres the in brief we've been thinking: Assuming the mycelium is actually what is ingested, and we've ordered pills that supposedly contain cordycep mycelium, then is it possible to start an agar culture from the pills contents. I just have a few things I need help with.

1. I'm assuming if the pill contents contain mycelium, it shouldn't take but maybe a few milligrams to start a culture, am I correct in this assumption?

2. What would be the best way to prepare the agar? Is it going to differ from the normal?

wikipedia on cordyceps:
"...Artificial culture of C. sinensis is typically by growth of the pure mycelium in liquid culture--stromata are not produced apart from the insect host."

the part that interested me is the typical growth is LC.
might be able to skip the agar completely.

taken from http://www.freepatentsonline.com/20070014811.html

regarding a patent for osteoporosis treatment or something, via cordyceps on agar. it mentions PDA, though i bet the gamut of agars will work (MYA, MYPA, etc)

[0025] The invention further provides the method of preparing the processed product of the mycelium of C. Sinensis. The method comprises culturing the mycelium of C. Sinensis on slant culture or plate culture system. The preferred embodiment of the culture is the slant culture. The method further comprises procedures of [0026] 1. Potato cubes, glucose and agar were added into distilled water to prepare Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA) [0027] 2. Culture

quite possible that they were dried at a high heat and therefore are dead. Alot of health inhibiting components in mushrooms are not usable unless transformed by heat.
Funny that the product that could be good for bringing back groth(non-heat died) could be the shitty product.
Stamets makes a slight mention of it here and in his Seminars.

Yeah I think I might as well try a Turbinado LC as well as culturing it on agar. There isn't a reason not to. Thanks for that info guys, and that stamets video was awesome!

Under FDA regulations, the tissue is autoclaved prior to loading into pills. You won't be able to start a culture unless they skipped that step.

Do you know if the same is true for whole cordyceps?

Here's a link to the ones a friend is getting me for xmas.

Wholesaling at around $1000/lb, this is one of the most expensive Chinese herbs. Actually, it's a Tibetan herb, gathered high in the mountains.

I'm not sure I'd want to purchase cordyceps from a website that refers to it as 'herb' rather than fungi.

However, if you do end up with a dried fruit, you can harvest the spores and culture them.

All of Newchapter's products are freezedried mycelium I wouldn't think that would be viable.

If you were bold you could email the univerity department below and offer to pay for a culture. I'm sure these people could send you a perfect culture but they also might just tell you to go to hell.
