i ordered pre made 1/2pint BRF cakes, and inoculated them, and the Myc is going crazy thru them, but i believe the dry verm layer got knocked down onto the sides where its not colonizing.
Even tho its my first time, u know how you can tell the difference btwn the dry verm and the substrate, anyway, the substrate is VERY colonized, while the (what i believe to be) dry verm that fell down the sides is showing no signs of colonization.
i opened one of my jars up yesterday just to see how it smelled, and the dry verm layer wasnt really there. leading me to believe more so that it got shaken down on the sides....
is there a fix/solution to this? will the dry verm eventually get the moisture it needs to colonize? should i maybe birth them all now and case? i know this will GREATLY increase my risks of contam, but im just worried that my protective barrier of dry vermiculite is no longer there
HELP PLZ

I don't believe the dry verm on the sides will be an issue. If your cakes are 100% colonized (minus the dry verm) then you can birth them. sometimes with pf your cakes will shrink a bit as they're colonizing and the dry verm layer can go down the sides. If you have a pic I may be able to help more.

Should be fine, don't understand how that much vermic could get off the top and down the sides..? Don't worry about the dry stuff. When they are 100% (disregarding the dry stuff). Do your dunk and clean in cold water. You will be fine.

yeah, sorry i forgot to attach a photo, the old lady was pullin me out the door to go to breakfast. and they were shipped to me via USPS, and they werent handled carefully. i had broken jars in my packages, so i can only imagine how much the substrate mixed with the dry verm.
heres a photo, i just took today, that might show you what i mean...
these 2 pics are of the same jar, one side appears to be fully colonized while the other side is stalled. it has looked like this for about a week now....maybe im just being a noob...they were inoculated 2 weeks ago yesterday.

This happend to my jars the first time, except I had used fine verm. It was on the side of the jar and I thought that part of my sub wasnt colonized... so I eventually birthed them and got beautiful results.
