Multispore vs. cloning
    #744312 - 07/13/02 09:12 PM (14 years, 4 months ago)

Nobody answered this in the mushroom cultivation forum, so I'm trying higher up the ladder:

I've been reading in the forums, but couldn't find a straight answer. A lot of people blamed problems on multispore, but nothing consistent or any evidence. So, for microscopic use of course, how would a multispore innoculation affect one's cultivation attempts?

Basically, with multispore you will get multiple strains growing through your casing, each having varying characteristics. With an isolate, all mushrooms will have the same genetic makeup. IMO you should (first) go with multi, then take the best few mushrooms from different areas of the casing and clone each; grow each of these isolates out, and keep the best.

Yeah, I gathered that much. I should be more to the point with my question. I've had moderate success with normal teks. I blame the failures on unsterile conditions. Now that I am building a flowhood, I would like to eventually try a bulk growing tek. Will using a clone make much of a difference in my results for growing on a straw and dung?

Well yeah it will as was stated above they will show characteristics similar to the mother they were origionaly cloned from ala more vigorous and larger growth faster coloniser more even flushes, but cloneing is'nt absolutely necessary to grow bulk and you should still get reasonable yields with out doing it .

I think this is a pretty striking example of a multispore result; This started from spores on agar, transfered once to another petri, harvested and put to birdseed.

As things colonize, either on petris, grain, or bulk, you tend to whittle down the number of mating types. Theoretically, you could have a multispore prep that results in a single genotype on the flush. The pic above, IMO, shows only TWO that made it to the end.

I have a clone of one of the big ones, we?ll have to see what it does
