Dame Helen reveals ' wonderful and terrifying' extremes of her LSD trip
    #7442895 - 09/23/07 04:37 AM (16 years, 4 months ago)

She may have won an Oscar for her dignified and regal portrayal of the Queen and won the hearts of British TV viewers as hard-bitten DCI Jane Tennison in Prime Suspect.

But Dame Helen Mirren has revealed a much wilder streak behind the perfectly poised exterior.

For she has admitted she took the hallucinogenic drug LSD while she was a jobbing actress in her 20s.

It happened during a stroll in the countryside with a group of bohemian friends she stayed with in an "artist's haven" in Stratford-upon-Avon. And she told millions of TV viewers she found the LSD trip wonderful initially, then horrifying, and vowed never to repeat it again.

One was taken as she set off for a walk in the countryside, the other as she lay down, affected by the drug.

The 62-year-old actress told interviewer Jonathan Ross: "I'd just taken a tab of acid – my first and last tab of acid, I can assure you – and was heading off into the fields and thinking, 'I'm not quite sure what's going to happen next'.

"And then, you know, the acid hit shortly after that and it was terrifying."

She asked Ross: "I don't know if you've ever taken acid?" When he said he had not, she continued: 2Well don't. I mean, I don't know how people can take it time after time.

"I had the most wonderful time on it – it was wonderful, partly because my good friend came up to me just as the world was refracting and said, 'Don't worry Hel, it's gonna be fine. Just let go and enjoy it and it'll be fine,' and I did.

"He sort of saved me and I had a fantastic time. But it's too much, it's too much."

Ross asked if the good part of the experience outweighed the bad.

Dame Helen replied: "No actually, such a good time that I didn't want to do it again. I thought, 'That was great, that was wonderful.' "But it was very, very extreme and, you know, you could see the danger in it."

In her new autobiography, In The Frame, she describes the life she led as a frequent visitor to the house in Stratford during her years performing with the Royal Shakespeare Company.

"It was like a cross between a country weekend home for toffs, an artists' convention and a travellers camp," she wrote.

"There was constant dressing up, animals everywhere, champagne occasionally and, if not, gallons of wine.

"The boys loved dressing in drag and the girls as nuns or tarts. There were also drugs, of course, marijuana mostly.

"Anyone who came was seduced, including some disapproving and uptight characters who hours later would be seen running through the garden with a feather boa round their neck."

But in the book, Dame Helen is keen to add: "Sex was private and personal, and almost always between established partners.

"There was a sweetness and kind of prudish innocence about it all, at least whenever I was around.

"My first night there I shared a bed with a large hairy Irish gentleman in the form of an Irish wolfhound called Murphy, who was outraged I had been given his bed.

"He spent the night trying to oust me, sometimes successfully."

Dame Helen, who has been married for the past ten years to American film director Taylor Hackford, has made no secret of her racy past.

From the start of her career, she has been famous for stripping for roles, once remarking: "Stripping for the camera is as easy as drinking a glass of orange juice on set.

"I follow the straightforward school of acting – when you're taking your clothes off, just drop 'em." During her time in the Royal Shakespeare Company, she became known as the "Sex Queen of the RSC" and it is almost 40 years since she first disrobed for the screen, the first time in her cinema debut Age Of Consent, posing nude for an ageing artist.

By 2003, at the age of 58, she was still taking her clothes off, for Calendar Girls, the true story of a group of Women's Institute members posing for a nude calendar to raise funds.

She has also always been famously outspoken, refusing to shy away from controversy.

When she took on the role of the Queen last year, she said: "I am not a monarchist. I loathe the British class system and the Royal Family are the pinnacle of all that."

These public figures and celebrities typically report "I only did it one time"....my BS meter pegs at this crap.

If someone experienced the most life-changing mystical experience of their life and NEVER chose to re-visit this epiphany, I would be skeptical of their report or alternatively I would consider them quite weak minded.
