I've been buying all the supplies and when I got my Organic Gypsum (which was a bitch to find btw) I was suprised how coarse it was.
Is this normal? or When the time comes for use should I smash it up?
stupid question...gotta know.

do not grind it up, you will only flatten it and make it worthless
it should be fine

*scratches chin* hmmm...any more input? Two opposing replies! That's odd.
ps I'll be using it in my 50/50 casings and Spawn Bags.

Can you please explain. Last I heard, gypsum was used for its anti-clumping properties and a few macronutrients. Chunks of drywall don't seem practical. I've always used the powdered form of gypsum.
He must have ordered that from you.

Gypsum keeps the ph from swinging either direction radically. It also supplies calcium and sulphur which help fruitbodies to develop. Again, get powdered gypsum, not pellets. If all you can find is pellets, break them up with a hammer. RR

It's grey, more or less.
I don't know if the granular stuff will break down, I guess it would be best to break it into powder.
Hmmm...

Gypsum supplies calcium and sulfur, both essential nutrients. It works much better ground to powder form and mixed well with the substrate prior to pasteurization. RR

Test the pellets in water. If they dissolve in a small glass of water, they'll dissolve in your substrate/casing mix. I've been using pelletized gypsum for years and have seen absolutely no difference between that and its powdered counterpart.

Hey primordial.....All I could find where I live is the pelletized gypsum. What I did, and it worked great, was to just put the pellets into my little coffee grinder (which I also used to grin my brown rice) and grind it up into a fine powder. I used it in my 50/50+ and when I tested the ph level, it was right on! You should have no problem. If you don't have a grinder, then you could also put some pellets into the bottom of some kind of glass and then take something like a screwdriver and use the handle of it to stick into the glass and grind the pellets up. I also used that method and it worked for me too. Hope this helps. Good luck!

yeah...i've heard that people mix gypsum with their cocaine so it won't get all clumpy!

I'll do the water test when the time comes, smashing them will be no problem if need be, not like it's a big deal to smash up.
but that can wait...I am building a flow hood right now.
EXCITED.
