hi ! I use staw, cuz I think it's very resistant to contaminations. I get it from my grandfather's farm, but you could also buy it in a pet shop.

Minibales of straw can be obtained at most hobby/craft stores, ie. Hobby Lobby, Michaels, etc.
Straw is a good source of food and an easy way to turn 5 lb of colonized dung/castings into a 15 lb casing.

Has anyone ever used a product from Petco called Alfalfa Hay? here are the stats from the Petco website:
Description The high protein and nutritious content of this superior product promotes vigorous health and a glossy coat. The natural roughage aids digestion and helps keep teeth sound.
Guaranteed Analysis Crude protein (min.) 17.0%, crude fat (min.) 1.0%, crude fiber (max.) 30.0%, moisture (max.) 15.0%.
its called Alfalfa hay but will this work in place of straw?

I have tried it... seemed to contaminate very quickly... the one tray that didn't gave extreamly poor yeils. The straw was much better.

Never used alfafa hay. But, the alfalfa pellets from Petco -- work. Same stuff, as the hay, just shredded micro/fine . They will disintigrate when hydrated . Hydrate some dung (horse or cow), blend into a thin soup, hydrate pellets with that. You get the best of both worlds . Warning -- when mixed like that, the material will heat up & compost a bit (so give it a few days to work itself out in a tub) & gnats love this stuff & appear out of no where. Keep a tight lid or stretch wrap over it, or you learn about gnats. SixTango

I would guess so (why not). Just hydrate the WC'ings with a lot of water, to a thin soup consistancy & hydrate the pellets with that. SixTango

my experiences with straw were awful. two different types, both inundated with trichoderma. i thought straw was supposed to be resisitant, but apparently not the batches i had.

With straw, You have to be clean, pasturize well, have a clean place to cultivate. It isnt easy, otherwise everybody would be thowing colonized quarts of grain into haystacks in fields & waiting for a crop to pop out of it. Sometimes you win , sometimes not . Dung is probobly the most resistant to contans, if you manage to keep the gnats out of the mix. SixTango

I have always found straw to be the easiest but I sterilize and use bags as far as dung goes I always wind up using too much moisture. To cure my moisture problem I just put card board on the bottom so it soaks the moisture up and mycelium loves it.
