Why arent women in to science or SF?
    #7441141 - 09/22/07 05:08 PM (16 years, 4 months ago)

I have never met a single female that was in to science fiction or actual science. Why is that? They seems to only be in to touchy feely stuff and intimacy etc. Its a serious flaw.

It's not that we aren't into science, you just haven't met us yet. I've spent damn near my whole life in the science industry, sorry to disappoint you...

I believe women are a minority in sciences because they are hard wired differently then men, so they dont enjoy it as much. Less then 10% of the people in my classes are women.

By the same token, there are barley any men in my wifes psychology program. Men just dont like psychology as much as physics (in general). There are less than 10% men in her classes.

Nature versus nurture? Could it be that the way society treats girls and boys differently is a contributing factor?

Also, there is a lot of anti intellectualism IMHO. What if studying science is seen as cool as shit versus nerdy, geek, weird, out there kind of thing? I know, I know, in certain circles Science is cool as shit but society in general don't perceive science this way. Or am I wrong to make this generalization? I don't think so.

What if science was as popular as sports in high school?

Do guys perpetrate player hating also (LOL)? Do guys have a geek culture that reject the girls, i.e turn the girls off by acting that girls are not smart enough, not wired, for science.

Computer Science is about the same I suppose, 10% girls. Some times I felt there were < than 10% lol.

For math, it's better. I'd say 25% to 35%. I suppose is because girls don't mind being a math teacher.

There were some really hotties    in my math department!

I would say this is the BIGGEST factor.

Look at how we humans tend to follow the genral conscensus, its everywhere - "be like everybody else".

Change happens slowly, someone does something out of the norm and it is rejected until it is slowly accepted.

Look at 100 years ago, before womens liberation they were practically forced to all be housewives!!!

I'm into science AND "real" science fiction, plus I've studied computer programming since the early 1980's, and I can read a map AND re-fold it when I'm done.   My sister is a professor of analytical chemistry.  I agree that both of us are in the minority amongst women, but we also seem to be in the minority amongst humans.  Few people I meet seem to understand even the most rudimentary principles of science and technology.

In college, I took a broad variety of courses to fulfill the science requirement of my B.S. degree.  Everything from Marine Biology to Earth Science to Inorganic Chemistry.  I loved every bit of it.  On my own, I've studied Genetics, Neurochemistry, Biology, Immunology, Endocrinology, etc...etc...  Science, to me, is the REAL magic in this world.

My GF is a huge SF nerd. She isnt so much into science itself but if you put on a decent SciFi movie or give her a decent SciFi book she will usually dig it.

I think it's definitely the way guys and girls are brought up. Girls are taught (whether on purpose or not) that they shouldn't be interested in science - that if they are, they are geeky and guys won't like them (which is BS).

I never liked science in school, but I liked math somewhat and computers a lot. Some science fiction stories I like, and some I'm not so interested in.

There is a culture among females to pretend we're not interested in that stuff, for some reason.. maybe others legitimately aren't, I'm not sure. But I have some friends who are, who will admit it to other female friends, but not so easily to guys...

To be fair women prefer more biological sciences if science at all.

In my classes theres a few women, and considerably more in maths.

Whats more shocking is the fact that about 90% of them are actually hot as fuck. Some tasty girls in my chemistry class

However; I doubt many of them are into nerd culture.

I must have missed that aspect of female socialization by being homeschooled. Lucky me! Being a "girly-girl" seems like such a waste of time.
