"Hunting" again (in my backyard)
    #7440062 - 09/22/07 10:53 AM (16 years, 4 months ago)

I'm not sure what it is, but I think its a beautiful little thing. Found growing on a different branch of the same rotting maple tree as the Pleurotus Dryinus that was growing a few weeks ago. Its about the same size as my fist (I have small girly hands). Any ideas?

Looks like some kind of slime mold, maybe dog barf. Do a google search, pretty cool stuff.

Thanks!

*stands corrected*

Shows what I know.

How big can these get? I have a tree that has this species growing on part of the trunk, something like 10 x 8 inches across and 2 inches thick!

From Wiki: "When mature, the fruiting bodies are dark grey, up to about 1 cm in diameter, and full of minute grey spores."

This thing is definitely bigger than 1cm, and its not mature yet...

Looks like a couple Lycogala epidendrum growing together, but at that size it is very likely to be something different.

What is the inside like?

It would also help a lot to see what it looks like when it is more mature.

It actually hasn't grown any bigger but the orange is definitely fading. I poked one of them with a stick and exposed what was inside:

I'm thinking cactu needs to get himself a better camera, one with a Macro closeup setting! With all the awesome stuff you come across, you need crisper photos. Maybe we should start a cactu camera fund? :smirk:

> give a camera i give you heaven

There are some really nice cameras on craigslist for $100 - 200.

If one or two people send me some money, I'll cover the rest and make it happen before mushroom season ends down there.

I bet someone here has an old digital camera that would work great, please, everyone ask your parents if they have an old 3 megapixel model that you can bum.

Sorry the radio doesn't exist anymore. I'm just too lazy to take it out of my signature.

Alan,

I would personally be willing to throw down $20 or so towards a camera with macro mode for catcu...if you can find a few more people willing to match that (or more), we might just have something here!

Yes, I'd be willing to match that contribution. Perhaps a seperate thread should be started?
