Okay i wanna say i started a baby bottle LC with Karo the last week or two of august it took about a week for the lc to start up. but i have had it up to today... This past week i put the baby bottle in the fridge. Since i am going to start my rye jars today i was wondering before i use my supplies, time and effort do you thimk my lc will take to the grain since i have had the lc for almost 1.5 months???
I am going to use 7 quart jars and 7 pint jars i some how mistplaced 4 quart and pint jars... i wll be following roger rabbits rye tek. i have 2 bags of rye berries(the bag even says rye berries on it) and 2 bags of hard spring red wheat berries... each bag weighs 28oz and when i check my 1 cup measuring cup it says 8fl oz... so to his tek it says 1 cup of rye to 1 quart jar and i think 1 pint jar is half a quart right? so i figured i would use half cup with the pint jars.. which is total of 10.5 cups of rye, i will go with 10 cups thats what roger uses in his tek. i will also, add 1 tbl of gypsum... how does this sound so far??
does hard red spring wheat berries the same as rye berries?

I just put it all in a big pan, soak for 24 hours, drain, rinse, simmer, rinse, drain well, and then load into the jars.
I add the gypsum during the second draining step.
Works like a charm!

cultures stored properly in the fridge will grow for years to come.

unless your growing white button mushrooms your shouldn't need the gypsum but if you feel like adding it feel free.

Gypsum has nothing do do with species. It's added to grains to help prevent clumping. RR

RR, what do you recommend for 7 pint jars when using rye for measurements? i know in your tek you say to use 1 cup of rye berries for every quart jar you intend to use.. but i only have 7 due to losing 4 quart and 4 pint jars... so i have to use 7 pints as well now..
i had figured if i use 7 quarts thats 7 cups of rye.. if i use 7 pints i considered them to be about half a quart jar.. so since i have 7 that would be another 3.5 quarts.. total of 10-10.5 quarts and that is exactly what you use in the tek. now i do not have a large kettle and i think my biggest pot wont be enough, so can i use my pc without the lid for soaking and simmering?

each bag weighs 28oz and when i check my 1 cup measuring cup it says 8fl oz...
An ounce of water at SATP is about 1 fl oz. Anything else like Rye will not match. Don't confuse them there are different ounces.
A simpler way of explaining that is...
A fluid ounce is a measurement of volume and a dry ounce is a measurement of weight.
