No pins yet...
    #7439211 - 09/22/07 03:15 AM (16 years, 4 months ago)

HI!
i'm doing my first pf-tek grow and I have my jars in the airing cupboard. They've been in there for a month or so (yes, probably over a month! I think the temp in there is a little low, I'll use a chamber next time!) and are totally colonised with no contams, but they don't seem to want to produce any pins.

I've heard that I can "cold shock" them to force them to pin. Is this a good idea?

my god man! have you done no reading on here whatsoever? your lucky its late or youd get a lot of shit right now... and im not really a shit giver. one of the leading pinning triggers is when you "birth" a cake from its jar. if they are fully colonized take them out of the jars dunk them in water for 12-24 hrs roll them in vermeculite and place them in a fruiting chamber with a light scedule with lots of fae's (frequent air exchanges) and daily misting. keep your rh up in the mid 90's

The tek i read showed little pins showing through the inside of the jar!
Well, i guess I'll go and read up on how to dunk... i wouldn't wanna get any shit by asking now, would i?

yea sometimes pins will start growing in the jars before they are 100% colonized but u dnt want to wait for that to happen. if i had a good pf tek bookmarked id giv it to ya but i dont.

dunking is just submerging your cakes in water for 12-24 hrs to hydrate them. it will giv them better flushes. and then rolling in verm is to help retain the moisture from your misting. gl man

The tek I use says this:

Within 5-10 days (with certain mushroom strains it can however take up to 30 days) pinhead-size accumulations of mycelium should form. These so called pins represent the beginning of mushroom growth. In the following days also small mushrooms with brown heads become visible. When this is the case it's time to birth the cake into the fruiting container where the mushrooms can develop to maturity.
Some strains don't easily develop pins. In this case put the colonized jar wrapped in a plastic bag in the fridge over night and then proceed to fruiting next day, even if the cake doesn't show pins yet. This cold shocking usually helps trigger pinning somewhat.

... so i just assumed that what was i had to do. Don't be so hard on me, it's my first time.

THE QUESTION I HAVE NOW IS SHOULD I COLD SHOCK THEM BY PUTTING THEM IN THE FRIDGE, OR JUST GO AHEAD AND DUNK? OR BOTH?

It's confusing but don't forget everyone has to start somewhere, and i'm looking for kindly advice not sarcasm!

i'm serious... watch those video's man...it'll help you out... and explain ALOT of stuff to you... Those PF-Tek part 1-4 was the biggest chunk of info that i learnt, and it's only like 30 minutes of watching, and it completely explains the Pf-Tek to you (making cakes = Pf-Tek) please watch em... and i'm not being sarcastic... being sarcastic would be to say to read more, yet not help any advice, which happens alot on these boards, coz hundreds of people constantly ask questions which can be answered if they just used the search function, but they dont coz they're lazy....so they get lazy responses. I hope the video's clear up any questions you have, after watching them...then post questions.

some strains do benfit from cold shocking but i wouldnt worry about it. id try and get a grow under your belt and go from there. i would def dunk n roll your cakes though.

I just rescued my cakes from their dunk and they came out smelling a bit funny. Not like the mushroomy smell you usually get, but a sweet, sickly smell like mouldy bread or something.
Is that normal?

Nope, you've probably got bacterial contamination from them sitting there for so long. Chances are, you've botched it. It happens. Maybe move them someplace and keep an eye on them, and if nothing happens in another couple of days, toss them.

Hmm, thought so.
It took sooo long for them to colonise! I think my airing cupboard simply isn't warm enough.
I'll have to build a little chamber with a water heater for them to sit in next time i think.

Optimal colonization temps are 84-86 degrees Fahrenheit, a simple incubator is pretty easy to make. Just do a bit more reading and you'll find everything you could possibly need to know.

Setting up a designated fruiting chamber is a good idea too, so you can provide your birthed cakes the optimal environment for fruiting. Ideally, this is a space with as close 100% relative humidity as you can get, fruiting sucks a good deal of the moisture out of a cake. Dunking is done to rehydrate mycelium between flushes and allow fruiting to continue for far longer than it would without the dunking.

Just keep on reading, there's so much to learn.

yeah, that's all in the pipeline
I bought an air filter the other day, but forgot to buy piping... so it's all coming togteher slowly. I just need to find the time to implement it all!

Thanks for the advice! I'll try no to get disheartened if it doesn't work out first time!
