NO PIN PICKING!!!
If you're worried about someone else picking them young, then get some leaves and cover them up.
They would have had 4x as much weight if you had waited.

they were growing at a community college with probably 7000 college kids and a mowed lawn... not a chance, although we left half and spread mycelium in the beds near by, but chill, they are fungi, and yes spiritual and wonderful but not infants or something. Also this is the first batch ive found anywhere in this town...in seattle they are like weeds.

So let me get this straight. You picked a bunch of pins, and then you ripped up the bed to spread the mycelium?? You can say goodbye to that patch. And if they "grow like weeds" then those pins shouldn't have mattered too much to you, you could have left them. You don't have to be "spiritual" but you should be respectful.
Cover them up with leaves, or just have faith. You have no clue how many of my biggest patches are in plain sight and they never get found. So many people in the city don't know what they are, you'd be surprised how long patches last in plain sight. The first pic in the last batch that @cro posted was right on a busy walkway, we found the pins, left them for 4 days and they were still there.

Props for innoculating the other woodchips with spawn.... but still, you should not pick pins. They have not had a chance to drop spores.
Remember, that patch might not be there if some kid had picked all the cyan pins in the area.
If it is in such a bad spot, consider transplanting to a safer, shaded area with plenty of moisture and chips.

psilygirl, i agree with what you're saying about plain view mushrooms. People are 1. not very perceptive at all of their surroundings, and 2. usually know better than to eat random mushrooms. And most people cannot ID mushrooms.
However, his transplanting the mycelium might work. It is certainly worth a shot. Of course, I definitely wouldn't tear through an entire patch unless i was transplanting.

If you transplant in the fall you won't see anything until the next fall, if it worked. So it seems unnecessary to rip up half a patch that was fruiting successfully this year. You could leave the pins, take a small handful of colonized chips and be on your way while leaving a patch intact.
I'm not saying spreading mycelium is bad, there are just.. well, other ways to go about it.

Alright, yeah, i thought that was the implication.. I agree.
I had to rip up one of last years transplants just today.
Long story, but quite the bummer. Luckily, the parent patch is intact, so i can expect some harvest from there.

Lame, lame, lame ....I went to a well known spot 2 days ago. I had spotted about 30 or so 1"-2" small ones the day before that. When I came back, all the pinning areas were stomped on, mycellium was uprooted, and there was a hand shovel sitting there with 6-8" deep holes in the woodchips where all the pins were. I assume some idiot high schoolers trying to grow them at home or something. I wish people would stop being so selfish.....
By the way flipped, nice finds....I would definately be interested in some Baeo spores....

They grow all the way down to the sf bay area and I believe they have been found even further south.
thanks for the hope, i'll keep on searching. it's hard because ive never seen a stuntzii before and they're not as easy to recognize as a caramel cap.

I just back from my first pick in the local woods near my house. I need some help with identifying, and what to do to properly clean them and whatnot.

i found an abundance of this in a boggy area with a lot of shrubbery around next to a tree. The gills underneath are very close and the smell is not very strong. if anyone could help, or needs any more info to identify let me know. thanks.

Hi everybody. I went out for my second time to look for some cyans. I didn't find any but I did see more mushrooms growing that last time. I didn't have a camera, so I thought I would draw a picture of them. I apolagise if it is bad quality. Here is some of the most common from what I can remember.

I seen acres and acres and acres of woodchips, not including heavy wood debris. Pretty frustrating but that part of the hobby I suppose. I thought that heavy rain (with thunder!) we had gotten the other day would help them come out. It seems to have brought a lot of some other mushrooms to the surface but I think that like some other plants, It might know how to tell the difference between a passing cold front and a dee permachill. I'm still just a noob so it's just an idea. There definelt arn't cyans "all over the place" in my neck of the woods however.
B.t.w It makes me feel personally really frustrated when people get torn up so badly for picking pins. I have never done mushrooms before and considering how hard I've looked If I saw pins I would very likely pick a few, also considering their rarity. It may feel fine to say that when you have bucket loads of mushrooms, but take away all your mushrooms and maybe you'll be picking pins too. It's not sacrilige, it may be wrong in certain situations, but people are much more important than mushrooms. May peace be with you everyone.

Nice drawings.
but your argument in justification of picking pins is thin at best. picking pins is a "tragedy of the commons" issue. if everyone picked pins we would not have such a glorious bounty of mushrooms. whether you have found them or not, psychoactive mushrooms grow in abundance in the PNW--especially in the seattle area, where i get the impression you are from. impatient people never succeed in both hunting mushrooms and cultivating them indoors.
there are more than enough mushrooms growing wild in the PNW for everyone to enjoy--but ONLY if people restrain themselves from picking pins! if you pick pins, the mushrooms do not have the opportunity to drop spores and thus recolonize the substrate. imagine if everyone were to only pick pins. patches would vanish. this would be a tragedy. hence, many (but i wish i could say "most") of us in the mushroom culture hold fast to the belief that responsible hunting entails NEVER picking pins, always leaving some shrooms behind, and to be considerate of others for god's sake. seespikerun wasn't considerate of others--he was greedy. maybe he could have shared the patch with fellow students at his college and they all could have tripped balls together? that would have been awesome. but instead, he not only raped baby mushrooms, he proceeded to desecrate their home by ripping up the mycelium network from which they sprang. very sad. i think we all hope for seespikerun to recognize that even if he were to have waited a few days and returned to have found his patch trampled upon or chopped up by a lawnmower, all would then be as it should be. there are other patches. at least the underground mycelium network would have remained. there is always next year, let alone next month.
in light of the fact that you have been hunting unsuccessfully for mushrooms, i understand your frustration...but perhaps because you have never done mushrooms before you do not understand why people are so upset. to many of us, mushrooms are a wondrous thing and should be shared, not horded like a dragon upon a pile of gold. for shame.
eh, sorry. i get verbose. again, good drawings, and good luck hunting. but please, if you find pins--of any species of mushroom--don't pick them.

Not trying to turn this into a debate about picking pins, but I heard that after mushrooms break the pellicle, then at that point the mushrooms have already gotten the psilcybin. So if I pick half a patch of pins, isn't it the same as picking half a patch of matured mushrooms?
I'm not saying it's always right to pick pins, and I recognize how terrible a thing it can be if everyone was picking pins, but I think that's not the same as saying you should never ever under no circumstances pick pins. (or perish?)

Its disrespectfull to pick them dude. If the caps dont open they cant send out spores.
I dont think you are looking hard enough, I have no problems here in cali and its alot harder to find them here.
