They really do find you! [Re: jeetered]

Last night I went out with some friends to a pretty kickin halloween party in Portland called Howl. It's the kind of scene where you really want to have a little "enhancement", if you know what I mean Being as I hadn't managed to find a patch this year (or ever for that matter), I bought some of the indoor variety and enjoyed the hell out of them for about 6 hours last night. Just hanging out with friends, dancing, staring at art, staring at people...the whole shebang. Had a wonderful time and just resolved to buy some more of that bunch from an acquaintance. That was before I went to pick up some firewood this morning.
I rolled up to this guy's house (friend of a friend) and he took me out to his wood pile and started loading up a box for me (nothing like free firewood!) when I happened to glance down and catch the sight of a wavy golden-brown cap with blue edges. Then I looked around a little more and saw a few dozen little homies nearby! I was so shocked that I couldn't do anything more than just stand there and stare at the ground...and all of the poor little cyans this dude was trampling!! AHHH! I couldn't do anything about it either. He had no idea what he was stepping on and was completely straight so far as I could tell, so I didn't have an opportunity to pick any or take any pictures But, now I know where a patch is, and I just have to find the right time to go back and harvest!...and every time that it rains I'll do the same again woot!
It really is true that they find you! I've probably put a good 40-50 hours into hunting over the past few years, but never had a find. Then, suddenly the morning after I commune I find some out of the blue. I think there's something there!

im planning a trip to oregon coast to hunt for our little friends. ive been hunting in eugene and surrounding area for the past 2 years and have found anything but libs. i was hoping that i could get a better idea for our trip. i was planning on heading to newport and then further north just stopping at random parks.
can anyone let me know where to start on the coast. where on the coast has produce fruits in the past? we are searching for cyans mainly.
thanks

We need rain! These babies are drying up, but some of them were still pretty and I picked the pretty ones.

And here's why we should turn over leaves now and then.

Can't you just water them? As in spray them or something?
When you pick 'em aren't you going to dry them and they'll shrivel anyhow?

Yeah, you could. I just don't. That patch is a long drive, and nice little hike up a hill. I'm not about to bring a bunch of water. But yes, that is a solution to dry weather. Mainly the damage done was from cold weather and alot of the fruits were rotting from it. Good point.

 no cyans for us today
so we took a stroll in another direction
 jackpot gymnopilus luteofolius

this is one of the largest active gymnopilus finds ive ever seen! im surprised i was there for it all.
saw this dude growing on the side of the pile of woodchips
 saw the blueish green scales
fuckin freaked out cause on the other side was like 5lbs of mushrooms.

had a little beer

and then i took some photos of the greening, which these seemed to show quite strongly.

we picked the pins too, cause, well, they arent cyans and we just figured it would be ok to rip the clusters out, this entire pile was fruiting them, we will be going back in a few days for more mature specimens.
some purple pins, doesnt luteo mean purple in latin?!?!
overnight these deposited spores all over the paper, all over each other, and all over my floor and desk etc!!!! theres spores all over the freakin room!!!!!!!
crazy...
more photos to come
is this not the largest gymn haul u guys have seen?

yeah i thought so myself, but i was only armed with my fingernails. and yet ive picked gymns in the past, taking the woodchips home with me, and found that they would still fruit up. plus, i only took from one half of the pile, theres another haul pretty equal to this waiting for us to return. this time ill bring hedge trimmers, my scissors barely didnt shit when trimming them

I live on 90 acres about halfway from eugene, or to the coast at about 360' above sea level in a valley with steap hills and a meadow in the valley. There's a wide variety of tree growth from mixed to all of any certain type of tree and everything from replanted clearcut to old growth reserves. There's also two streams that run through the property. I've found a bunch of chanterelles both golden and white and there's truffles that grow in the old growth reserve. There's even a huge patch (about 100 yards and the width of a road) that is 3 feet deep with mushroom compost and I've been told was inoculated with chicken of the woods and shitake.
I've been looking everywhere for either cyans or libs because I'm fairly new at huntin' and want something I can ID easy. I've been searching mostly in the tall grasses in the valley floor for the libs and in patches of woodchips spread though some midsized evergreen tree areas for cyans, but I havn't been able to find any.
Am I waisting my time looking around my place here? And if so do I need to get more towards the coast or inland or further north or south? Also what should I be on the lookout for other active types? aroun

damn in washington it better rain soon, i check up on a few patches and i saw alot of damage from the lack of rain and dry cold air... it sucks!
Most inter-city patches i noted had taken more damage from the dryness and most woodland patches were still moist becuase its duh forest
none the less i have made hundreds and hundreds of dollars and learned alot about actually cultivating local breeds of mushrooms which will only get better in future season :-D
season still has some life in it though, more rain will extend it too!!
peace
