Still pretty early to be finding anything, unless you know exectly where to look. I haven't had any luck in Portland, although some people did last year. I would look somewhere more beach grassy around the coast.

I'm going camping near where the Columbia meets the ocean. Gonna check some known spots down there. I don't really expect to find any yet, but I'll let yall know.

Went and checked out some of my known azurescens patches near the coast on thurs and fri. Didn't see anything yet. I think it needs to get colder and more rain, which it is supposed to all week(sorry to talk about the weather, but it is directly related to mushroom hunting...)

IME PDX hasn't been all that prolific for producing large crops of cyans. Is this the year it's all changing?

BTW: went on a run through a local park recently, not even in hunting mode, and saw several mulched spots around trees that had noticeable divets in them--someone had obviously dug out several spots and probably fucked all the mycelium up, too. BASTARDS!

The main trouble in the Portland area is that almost everyone uses conifer(douglas fir, or hemlock) bark as mulch. I've never found actives on conifer bark. I've heard of people finding them on it, but I think it's because it was put over the top of hardwood chips.

Vancouver is 95% conifer bark mulch. Never had any luck there. I may not be looking in the right places though. Head for the coast and look for grassy areas.

What affect do windstorms have on the fruits?

I've had pretty good success hunting on the coast during pretty wicked windstorms, so from my experience, they don't seem to mind it much(unless it's a real dry wind).

Had pretty good luck azure hunting on the coast near the mouth of the Columbia. Found quite a few old nasty's(I'm kinda picky though). Found enough nice ones to satisfy me too. It took a little more looking though, as the more mature one's had gone off-color(kinda blue/blackish) then found fresh ones around them.

Nice finds. I've never looked around dead pines, but I often have good luck under willows(as long as it's not too boggy)

I think that this rain system coming through, we'll probably see some more azure flushes!

I'll be headed to the coast on thurs, fri to check for azures. Seems like a pretty good forecast for them. I don't think our season is too close to over yet.

I usually go away from the water far enough that the soil becomes mostly soil (rather than sand). I don't usually find them on wood, myself. usually I find them growing out of grass patches. Usually, I don't find them too close to conifers. The plant called "scotch broom" seems to be a pretty good indicator plant. I also find them around the base of the willows fairly often(except for when it's real boggy around them.

Hope this helps you out a little...

In the Portland/Vancouver area, conifer bark is pretty much the main mulch that is used. I have never found it conducive to actives.

Indianspirit, I'm glad I could help you. Best of luck in your hunting. I don't think it's too late at the oregon/sw washington coast. All that nice warm wet weather!

Watch out for those ones that look like azurescens, but have a tan or orangey pink cast to the stems. They look like gallerina to me(poisonous). Azurescens always have a very white stem with blue bruising. Make sure to spore print too. Azurescens will have a purply brown spore print. gallerina will have more of a rusty brown print. Be careful!

I'm going hunting tomorrow. I'll post a report on Sat. Usually, they don't mind the windstorms too much from my experience. Seems they are designed for that kind of thing.

So, I'm down at the nw oregon/sw washington coast in a hotel right now. we went and checked out some spots. The azurescens are everywhere right now. I'd have to say that it's about the peak season right now. I'm not sure if they'll make it through the impending cold spell though, so I'd recomend looking asap.

I'll bet that if I went to the coast right now, I could find some azurescens. I'm thinking about checking it out the week after christmas. It hasn't really gotten that cold around these parts yet.

Yeah I've been pondering the same thing. I dunno how cold it got on the coast, but it sure got cold in Portland area.
